Globalization?

 It encompasses a multitude of
processes that involves the economy,
political systems, and culture. Social
structures are directly affected by
globalization.
Globalization?

 “a process of world shrinkage, of


distances getting shorter, things
moving closer. It pertains to the
increasing ease with which somebody
on one side of the world can interact,
to mutual benefit with somebody on
the other side of the world” – Thomas
Larsson (2001), Swedish journalist

 “the expansion and intensification of
social relations and consciousness across
world-time and across world-space” –

Expansion – refers to both creation of new social networks
and the multiplication of existing connections that cut across
traditional political, economic, cultural and geographical
boundaries
Intensification – refers to the expansion, stretching and
acceleration of these networks
GLOBALIZATION VS GLOBALISM
 If GLOBALIZATION represents the many
processes that allow for the expansion and
intensification of global connections,
 GLOBALISM is a widespread belief among
powerful people that the global integration of
economic markets is beneficial for everyone
since it spreads freedom and democracy
across the world.
Multiple levels of Globalization
 Anthropologist Arjun Appadurai, globalization
occur on multiple and intersecting dimensions of
integration that he calls “scapes”
 ETHNOSCAPE – refers to the global movement of people
 MEDIASCAPE – about the flow of culture
 TECHNOSCAPE - refers to the circulation of mechanical
goods and software
 FINANCESCAPE – denotes the global circulation of money
 IDEOSCAPE - is the realm where political ideas move
around

 Go to your room and do an inventory of
everything you have in your possession.
 Organize your inventory into two types;

“things” that are made in the Phils. And second,


those that are often foreign brands.
 List the countries of origin of your foreign-
brand items
