Globalization and globalism are two related but different terms.

This has caused

them to be mistaken for one another. Globalization refers to the growth of connections
across the planet, while globalization is a belief held usually by powerful individuals that
globalization is beneficial for humanity. Globalism posits the idea that it is through
globalization that freedom and democracy spreads globally. Ironically, they themselves
disregard the freedom of individuals who chose to oppose globalization, therefore
invalidating their own idea of democracy. At the very least, globalization is a process
while globalism is a belief. Globalization unevenly affects everyone, while globalism
believes that it is favorable for every citizen.
Since globalization is a widespread and occurring phenomenon that unevenly
affects everyone, it is understandable that each person also has their own experiences
and perceptions of it. However, according to Claudio and Abinales (2018), Manfred
Steger perhaps has the best scholarly definition of the term which describes the process
as “the expansion and intensification of social relations and consciousness across
world-time and world-space”. Expansion refers to the growth and formation of
connections that does not simply limit to economic, traditional, cultural, and geographic
boundaries. Intensification on the other hand refers to the extension of these
connections. However, these connections do not only refer to physical boundaries, but
also consider how humans perceive time and space. In a nutshell, this process makes
the people think that the world is getting “bigger” with lots of things to know about, but
also brings them “closer” to one another.
States have developed the idea of boundaries which determine their overall
territory. Nonetheless, globalization has not literally broken these boundaries, but allows
states and its citizens to move in and out it. People initiated the process of globalization,
and it is through them that it moves. Its movement is not just a single process, but
occurs at multiple and intersecting levels at the same exact time. There are five levels
proposed by an anthropologist named Arjun Appadurai which he called as scapes.
These five scapes are known as ethnoscape – movement of people, mediascape –
culture, technoscape – technological goods, financescape – money, and ideoscape –
political ideologies. Globalization occurs through these five dimensions because it is the
most common, if not the only things that are globalized across the world. The movement
of these forms of globalization allows the people to share the same cloud of information,
and be aware with the happenings both inside and outside of their countries. Thus, it is
not just the people, culture, technology, money, and ideologies that move, but the ideas
that are incorporated with it.
Considering all that is said, globalization is an important phenomenon. It allows
the people to become socially aware of the happenings across the world, acquire
information that are discovered from other countries, reduce the gap in distance
communication, promote global governance and economic growth, and helps improve
the standards and state of living of people. However, globalization also has its negative
effects like pollution, low salary, and abuse of power.
