Lesson 1: Drawing Artifacts

There are many stories

about the trade relations
between our ancestors,
our Asian neighbors,
and Spanish colonizers.
One of these stories was
about the Chinese
commending the
honesty of the Filipino.

[ CITATION Pas1 \l 1033 ]4

Artifacts are important becau
se not only they provide us
with a glimpse into the
lifestyles and customs of
ancient civilizations, but also
and most importantly they
are seminal tools in our
quest to know what
Prehistory was like,
considering there are no
written literature dating from
that period of human
civilization.

Why is it important to
preserve historical artifacts?

It is important to preserve
artifacts from historical events so
we can remember, learn about
and honor those who were
involved.

When an artifact is conserved to

retain its current condition, it
preserves the truth of the
historical story for generations to
come.

Lesson 2: Drawing Heritage Houses and Other Architectural Landmarks

Review of the previous lesson

Like artifacts, you do not need to look far to be inspired to draw. Whether you are
walking or sitting on a vehicle as you go around your barangay, town, or city, you will
realize that there are houses and other structures that have been around for so many
years.

The architecture of
the Philippines (Filipino:
Arkitekturang Pilipino) reflects the
historical and cultural traditions in
the country.

In this period, the plan for the

modern City of Manila was
designed, with many
neoclassical architecture and art
deco buildings by famous
American and Filipino architects.

[ CITATION Pas1 \l 1033 ]9

Filipinos have a lot of indigenous
architecture to be proud of part of
this are the Ivatans and the
Itbayats that created the rakuh,
the Atis and Agtas that made the
lean-to, and the Ifugaos that built
the fale. Others are built on the
sea while others are on treetops.

Ang Bahay na Bato o Bahay-na-

bato ay isang uri ng bahay na
kilala sa Pilipinas. Naitayo ang
mga ito sa panahon ng
pananakop ng mga kastila, at
literal na ibig sabihin ay “bahay
na gawa sa bato”. Ngunit hindi
lamang siya simpleng bahay na
gawa sa bato..

Lesson 3: Drawing Heritage Churches

Review of the previous lesson

Aside from ancestral houses, buildings, and other structures, part of the country’s
distinct architectural landmarks are heritage churches. These are seen in different parts
of the country as a result of more than 300 years of Spanish colonialization.

Filipinos are skilled workers, but

they were clueless about the
Baroque Churches in Europe. At
a time when there were no
photos, videos, or any type of
media to show them samples of
what Baroque churches look like,
they set out to work of these
bastions of faith out of stone,
hardwood, and other local
materials. Everyone in community helped
out in the building and designing
of churches. The seculars and
the religious orders led these
developments. You might notice
some of the emblems of the
Augustinians, Franciscans,
Dominicans, Jesuits, and
Recollects at the façade of the
Churches.

[ CITATION Pas1 \l 1033 ]12

Activity 1: Creating illusion
Draw the façade of one of the heritage churches in your community. Show the illusion of
space depth.

Activity 2: Showing, naminig, and describing significant parts of the different

architectural designs found in local heritage churches

up photos of these significant parts, then paste it on a short bond paper. Name the
heritage churches, where these are found, and a short description of its distinct
architectural designs.
