Cultural Communities

animal or synthetic fibers to create
practical or decorative objects.

in making designs out of these centuries-
old art techniques. Next meeting, we are
going to create and display Tie-dye
bracelets as well as the tie-dyed fabric
weave bracelet.

IV. ASSIGNMENT

Group Activity. Tie-dyeing a T-shirt


Let us make a tie-dye t-shirt. Together with your group mates, let us follow the procedure below.
How to make a Tie-dye on a t-shirt
Materials:
o White old cotton t-shirt
o Colored dyes
o Elastic bands (number depends on the number of rings to be created)
o Soap and Gloves
o Stick and salt
Procedure:
Step 1: Get a t-shirt (a white cotton). Set-up at a place with a water supply nearby (sink
area).
Step 2: Rinse the t-shirt in water and soap, then wring.
Step 3: Pinch about 1 inch of the fabric at the center. Tie tightly with an elastic band.
Step 4: Continue tying more elastic bands below each other, spacing about one inch apart. Tie as
many as you like. This will create circle patterns on the fabric.
Step 5: Soak the fabric using a stick in the dye (and salt) and boiling water mixture as instructed
on pack
Step 6: Rinse well in clean water. The water from the squeezed fabric should run clear after.
Wring the fabric
Step 7: Hang outside to dry.
