INTRODUCTION
• An Automatic Water Level Sensor is an electronic
device used to detect and indicate the water level in an
overhead tank. Whenever the tank gets filled, we get
alerts on particular levels. Here we have created 5
levels (very low, low, medium, high and full). We have
added 5 LEDs to indicate initial five levels with colours
(Red, Orange, White, Blue, Green). It is designed to
detect the presence of water level and provide an alert
in time to allow the prevention of misuse of water or
damage in case of agricultural sectors.
COMPONENTS USED
• BC547 TRANSISTOR.
• 470 OHM AND 10K OHM RESISTORS.
• COLOUR LED’S.
• 9 V BATTERY + BATTERY CLIP.
• IC-555 TIMER.
• P-N JUNCTION DIODE.
• RELAY.
• IMMERSIBLE PUMP.
• 0.01u CAPACITOR.
• BREADBOARD.
• WIRES.
DETAILS OF COMPONENTS
1.Transistor - In this circuit, we use BC547
transistor which is a common emitter npn
transistor. This is basically used for
amplification and switching purpose

2. Resistors -It is a passive component used to

control current in a circuit.
3. LED’S – It is a two lead semiconductor light
source. It is a p-n junction diode and emits
light when activated.

4.Power Supply – A DC power supply of about

9V is taken.
5.IC-555 timer -The 555 timer IC is an integrated
circuit (chip) used in a variety of timer, pulse
generation, and oscillator applications.

6. Diodes – Here we use a PN junction diode

(which has direct energy band gap) in forward
biased condition and produces light when
biased with a current.
7.Relay –A relay is
an electrically operated switch.

8.IMMERSIBLE PUMP- This pump is used to pull

water from the bucket and supply it to the
container assumed as our tank.
9. Capacitors –It is used in electronic filters to
filter out frequencies that we don’t want.

10. Breadboard – It is a construction base for

prototyping of electronics. It is used for
temporary prototyping and experimenting
with circuit diagrams.
11. Connecting Wires – Few connecting wires
are used for connection in the circuit.

Working
• The operation of this project is very simple and
can be understood easily. In our project
“Automatic water level sensor” there are 3 main
conditions:
• There is no water or very less water available in
the source tank.
• Intermediate level.
• There is ample amount of water available in the
source tank or about to overflow.
• So let us discuss on the more about these 3
conditions
• After establishing the required connection as
shown in the circuit diagram, we place the
other ends of the five wires which are
connected to the base of the five transistors
into a container at five different levels of
height.
• Suppose wire 1 is at a lower height.
• Wire 2 – 4 at intermediate height
• Wire 5 at a height from which water is
supposed to overflow.
• As we start pouring water into the container,
the water level touches the first wire (Wire1)
which is at a lower level and the circuit gets
completed and current starts flowing and the
first led (D1) glows.

• Gradually, as the level of water goes on

increasing the other LEDs (D2,D3,D4,D5 glows)
indicating that the water has reached to
maximum height.
• As the water level crosses the maximum limit,
the IC-555 timer automatically switches off
the pump.
• Thus, this simple circuit depicts how a Simple
Automatic water level sensor helps us in
preventing the flow of water and further help
in reducing the wastage of water and power.

• So, it turns us to be a very useful appliance

which can used.
• Similarly the IC-555 timer will automatically
START the pump set as soon as the water level
falls below the predetermined level and shall
SWITCH OFF the pump set as soon as tank is
full.
• Fuel level indicator in vehicles.
• Liquid level indicator in the huge containers in
the companies.
APPLICATION
• Automatic Water level Controller can be used
in Hotels, Factories, Homes Apartments,
Commercial Complexes, Drainage, etc., It can
be fixed for single phase motor, Three Phase
motors and open well, Bore well and Sump.
We can control two motor and two sumps and
two overhead tanks by single unit.
CONCLUSION
Hence by installing this system to all places
we can save our precious liquid "water”:-
• It will decrease the amount of water over
flowing from the tanks .
• No need of extra supervision for manual
switching of pumps ON/OFF .
• It can be used in precise projects or conditions .
• It consumes very less amount of energy .
• Shows clear indication of water level in over head
tanks .
• Avoids seepage of roofs and walls due to
overflowing tanks .
• Thus we can ensure that, this technique is much
efficient and cheap to use for our residential
purposes.
