PIPE SPACING

ABOUT SPACING

 Spacing is function of size of pipe, the fluid conveyed

by piping system.

 Spacing is tool to get clear piping arrangement.

 Proper gap between arrangements for future process

planning.
OBJECTIVES OF SPACING

 To maintain allowable space between the pipe line for

operator service

 To prevent / control piping vibration

 To resist external influences such as wind ,earth quake

 To limit the sagging of allowable range.

Spacing concept in supports

 Pipe support are an integral and important part of piping

design methodology.

 Pipe spacing is important criteria of pipe supporting

arrangements.

 To resist external influences such as wind, eathquake

shocking loading.
Pipe way layout steps

 Determine approximate length of pipe way from plot plan

 Establish lines size and temperatures.

 Calculate line spacing at corners.

 Size the loops to fit the available space.

 If the line spacing is wasting berthing room at the turns,

determine which lines are giving the most trouble.
Criteria for pipe spacing

 Thermal expansion.

 Offsets & differential settlement.

 Free floating systems.

 Piping accessories. (e.g. insulation)

Free-floating systems.

Free-floating systems are piping systems

which are allowed to thermally expand or
contract without the use of expansion
joints, provided that this movement does
not cause bending-moment stresses at
branch connections or is not harmful to
joints and changes in direction or to parts
of structures or other equipment.

Offsetting and differential

In many piping system designs,

offsets or differential settlement
must be considered. This is
particularly important, as pipes
pass from one structure to
another. Flexible couplings offer
the designer a method to
accommodate offsets of pipe
runs due to misalignment or
building settlement. The offset
transition can be achieved only
with flexible couplings, as they
allow for angular deflection at
each joint.
Thermal expansion & contraction

 THERMAL EXPANSION &

CONTRACTION

Δ=eL
e – linear coefficient of thermal
expansion (From data table)

L -length of pipe line.

Recommended clearance & elevation

 Consider average spacing between lines as 0.25 m.

 If orifice runs , after pumps to be near a column at 2 m

level.

 Spacing between supports to be 5 to 7.5 m .

 Clearance between bottom of pipe & grade for drain valve to
be 15 to 25 cm.

 To maintain minimum 3” inch space between outside of pipes

& outside of pipe and weld on elbow.
 In orifice flange routing .
 To maintain minimum dist. Vessel to vertical pipe
routing with insulation.

 To maintain space between crossing platform

limited to 0.5m
Pipe space calculation in insulation
Routing

 Pipe space

=(Do+Dt) / 2 +(25 mm + thk of insulation)

Do - O.D of small size pipe (mm)

Dt - O.D of flange of large size pipe (mm)
Spacing in different pipe line

 To maintain following spacing for safety in different

pipelines.
Space in orifice instrumentation

 In throat tap orifice alignment should be follow the given

spacing.

Instrument scope.
 Spacing in under ground piping details.
SOME IMPORTANT ASPECTS

 Minimum spacing should be maintained in headroom

clearance above 7’-10”.
 Maintain a minimum horizontal clearance between
structural column &manual operating valve end up to
minimum 2’-6”.
 Minimum headroom clearance over secondary road ways
is 10’-0”.
 Consider average spacing between lines as 0.25 m
 Orifice runs, after pumps to be near a column at 2 m
level.
 Spacing between supports to be in 5 to 7.5 m.
MERITS IN SPACING

 We can easier to service in the process piping.

 Avoid the inconvenience arrangements.

 Easy to add extra routing &mounting in process piping.

 Can be reduce in accident in plant.

 Increase life of pipe duration.
