Read the following and answer the questions given below.

To do work, energy is needed. Energy is the ability to

do work. We need energy to do our work every day to
perform any activity like playing, reading and sleeping.
Even machines need energy to work.

IV ANSWER THE FOLLOWING:

1.You have to load your suitcase on to a truck. You are not able to lift
the suitcase. Which simple machine can help you do this? Why?
Ans: We would use an inclined plane. A slope will help to move the
load from the ground onto the truck with less effort.
2. A single fixed pulley does not reduce the effort required to lift a
load. How does it make our work easier?
Ans: A pulley makes work easier for us by changing the direction of
force applied. A downward effort is used to lift the load up.

3. A wheel is not a simple machine. What will you do to make it into

a simple machine? What is such a machine called?
Ans: We can attach an axle to a wheel to make it a simple machine. It
is called wheel and axle. The axle is a rod fixed in the centre of the
wheel. A screw driver and a potter’s wheel are all applications of this
simple machines.
4. Describe the experimental set up to understand the working of a
screw.
Ans: To show that the winding edge, called a thread, of a screw is an
inclined plane:
a. Draw a right –angled triangle on a piece of paper.
b. Cut it out.
c. Colour the longest edge and wrap the paper on a pencil so that the
coloured side is seen.
d. Notice that the inclined edge of the paper looks like the thread of a
screw.

5. What is a pulley? How are heavy objects lifted with the help of
pulleys?
Ans: a. A simple pulley consists of a grooved wheel through which
rope passes.
b. The wheel is fixed to a support above the load.
c. The object to be lifted is tied to one end of the rope.
d. The rope is placed in the groove of the pulley in such a way that its
two ends are on the two sides of the pulley.
e. The object tied to one end of the rope is lifted by pulling down on
the free end of the rope.
f. A downward effort is used to lift the load up.

6.A wheel is not a simple machine. What will you do to make it into a
simple machine? What is such a machine called?
Ans: We can attach an axle to a wheel to make it a simple machine.
It is called wheel and axle. The axle is a rod fixed in the centre of
the wheel. A screw driver and a potter’s wheel are all applications
of this simple machine.
7.Which road needs lesser effort to travel: a steep road or winding
road?
Ans: A winding road is easier to travel since it is an inclined plane.

8. What are the advantages of solar energy?

Ans: This energy is abundant on Earth and is also renewable and
non –polluting.

9.What are the fulcrum, load and effort in a lever? How are levers
useful?
Ans. The fixed point of support on a lever is called the fulcrum. The
object to be lifted or moved is called the load and the force applied to
raise or move the load is called the effort. Levers help us to lift or
move things by using force.

10.What is a pulley? How are heavy objects lifted with the help of
pulleys?
Ans. A simple pulley consists of a grooved wheel through which a
rope passes. The wheel is fixed to a support above the load. The
object to be lifted is tied to one end of the rope. The rope placed in the
groove of the pulley in such a way that its two ends are on the two
sides of the pulley. The object tied to one end of the rope is lifted by
pulling down on the free end of the rope. A downward effort is used
to lift the load up.

Assertion and reasoning

In the following questions, a statement of assertion is
followed by a statement of reason. Mark the correct choice as
a. If both assertion and reason are true, and Reason is the
correct explanation of assertion.
b. If both assertion and reason are true, but reason is not
correct explanation of assertion.
c. If assertion is true, but reason is false.
d. If reason is true, but assertion is false.
