ANNEX-B
Structural Design (Working stress Method)
This annex provides the guidelines to the structural design using WSM
B-1 General
• B-1.1 Refers to section-3 of IS 456 for general design requirements
• B-1.2 To obtaing the redistributed moments using coefficients by using the method
mentioned in 22.5. Obtained support moments may be manupulated by ±15% if these
moments are used in calculating span moments.
• B-1.3 Assumptions in WSM are mentioned.
B-2 Permissible stresses
• B-2.1 Permissible stress are considered are mentioned in Table-21,23
• B-2.1.1 Permissible direct tensile stress of concrete is clearly mentioned.
• B-2.2 Permissible stress in steel shall not exceed the values in Table 22
• B-2.2.1 Gives information about the tensile steel when provided in more than one layer
B-2.3 Increase in permissible stress
In case of dynamic loads, temperature and shrinkage the stresses mentioned in table-21,22,23
are to be increased by 33 1/3%.
B-3 Permissible loads in compression members
• B-3.1 Equation for permissible axial load on pedestal; or short Colum is given and
minimum eccentricity according to 25.4 can be incorporated in to the Eq. This eq. is used
when ties are provided.
• B-3.2 This clause is for helical reinforcement Load on member should satisfy requirements
of 39.4.1 and 1.05 times the load for similar columns with ties.
• B-3.3 Axial load on long column depending on effective length is given
• B-3.4 Allowable load on composite column, details of metal core, reinforcement and
connection of reinforcement and metal core is mentioned.
B-4 Members subjected to combined axial load and bending
• B-4.1 This clause gives the tensile capacity of uncracked section which is subjected to
unixial and biaxial bending
• B-4.2 This gives the strength in the cracked section and the strength of concrete is ignored.
• B-4.3 Members subjected to combined direct load and flexure is designed by LSD.
B-5 Shear
• B-5.1 Nominal shear stress is calculated from the formula mentioned.
• B-5.1.1 Shear stress of beam of varying depth is calculated.
• B-5.2 Design shear strength of concrete is calculated according to percentage of steel and
grade of concrete from table-23, permissible shear stress of soid slabs and members under
axial compression has been discussed in this.
• B-5.3 Minimum shear reinforcement.
• B-5.4 Design of shear reinforcement is done for vertical stirrups, Bent up bars, Inclined
stirrups.
• B-5.5 In general, section near to support is subjected to higher shear values so enhancement
of shear strength has been taken care in this clause.
• B-6 Torsion
• B-6.1 In general torsion is neglected because shear reinforcement provided will be
sufficient enough for torsion.
• Torsion is converted to equivalent shear by the formula subjected to and design is carried
out according to clause B-6.3.1
• In some cases torsion is converted to equivalent bending moment and longitudinal
reinforcement is calculated accordingly.
• Transverse reinforcement is calculated according to formula given in B-6.4.3 for the
combined action of shear and torsion.
ANNEX-C
• Calculation of deflection
• Total Deflection is taken summation of short term deflection, deflection due to
shrinkage, Deflection due to creep.
• Shrinkage and creep are long time processes.
ANNEX-D
Slabs spanning in two direction
• Moments, torsion are calculated by the coefficients according to the table-26.
ANNEX-E
• Effective length of column is calculated by the table 28. And effecive length ratio is found
out by the Fig-26
ANNEX-F
• Design crack width is calculated and the stress variation is taken as linear in this section.
ANNEX-G
• Moment of resistance of rectangular and T section is as according to LSD is represented in
this annex
