Different Parts and Function of System Unit

The document describes the basic components inside a computer system unit and their functions. It discusses the power supply, motherboard, optical drive, cooling fan, processor, RAM, sound card, video card, and hard disk drive. The power supply converts AC power to DC power for the components. The motherboard connects all internal components. The optical drive reads and writes CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays. The cooling fan cools the processor. The processor performs computations. RAM provides temporary storage. The sound and video cards manage audio and graphics respectively. The hard disk drive provides permanent storage.

What is Power Supply?

■ This is the component that is

responsible for supplying the power
to the entire system.
■ It converts the AC power from the
power outlet to DC power in
different voltages.
■ The six colors of the power supply
cable denote different voltage
ratings.
What is Power Supply?

■ The orange cable supplies +5 volts which is for power good

signal.
■ The red cable supplies +5 volts for the TTL ICs.
■ The yellow cable supplies +12 volts for the motherboard, CMOS
ICs, and motor.
■ The blue cable supplies -12 volts for the motherboard.
■ The white cable supplies -5 volts also for the motherboard.
■ The black cable supplies the ground signal.
What is Motherboard?

■ The motherboard is the body.

■ This is where all the components
and devices are connected like the
physical RAM, graphics adapter,
floppy disk drive, optical drive, hard
drive, network card, sound card,
keyboard, mouse, and others.
What is Optical Drive?

■ An optical drive in a computer

system allows you to use CDs,
DVDs, and Blu-ray discs to listen to
music or watch a movie.
■ Most drives also allow you to write
data to a disc, so you can create
your own music CDs or create a
backup copy of important data.
What is Cooling Fan?

■ Used to cool the CPU (central

processing unit) heatsink.

■ The heat sink absorbs all the heat

produced by the processor. The
cooling fan then lowers down the
temperature of the heat sink by
blowing cool air.
What is Processor?

■ This is the brain of the computer

that does all the thinking and
processing
What is RAM?

■ It is considered volatile memory,

which means that the stored
information is lost when there is no
power.

■ It takes care of long-term storage,

to provide quick access to files that
the computer is actively reading or
writing
What is Sound Card?

■ It is an internal expansion card

that provides input and output of
audio signals to and from a
computer under control of
computer programs.

■ It converts digital data to analog

sound waves you can hear.
What is Video Card?

■ Graphics cards allow computers to

produce graphics and images more
quickly. A graphics card has its own
processor, a GPU or graphical
processing unit.

■ The video card connects to the

motherboard and the monitor. This
allows the card to accept information
from the CPU (central processing unit)
and send output to the monitor.
What is Hard Disk Drive?

■ It is a device that stores all the

software installed on a computer,
as well as all the data files created
and used by this software.
■ This includes any documents you
have created and downloaded,
such as photos and music. The
hard drive is a form of permanent
storage,
