The low income group housing scheme, which was introduced towards the end
of 1954, provides for the grant of long-term house building loans at a reasonable
rate of interest to persons whose income does not exceed Rs. 6,000 per annum.
The low income-group housing scheme has tried to meet a widely felt need and
large numbers of persons have sought to take advantage of it. However, on
account of high land prices and the lack of suitably developed sites, progress in
the construction of houses under the scheme has not been as rapid as was
hoped for.
