Health Education is a process that informs,
motivates and helps people to adopt and
maintain ,healthy practices and life styles,
advocates environmental changes as
needed to facilitate this goal and conducts
professional training and research to the
same end…
Definition-II
Health education is a systematic social educational
activity which has plan, organization, and evaluation. It
spreads the knowledge related to health care to people. It
assists people to understand themselves health status,
recognize the factors harming health. It makes people
change their ill life habits and behaviors, and adopt the
behaviors and life styles conducive to health actively, and
reduce and eliminate the health risk factors in order to
prevent illness, promote health and increase the quality of
life.

Health Education is a part of Primary
Health Care to encourage people for
Want, knowledge, action, seek health
 Health education is not a separate entity,
rather is an integral component of all priority
health programs

 Mass media used for health education of the


public about health matters on larger scale

 In addition, the staff of the ministry of health


including the Doctors, Nursing staff &
LHWs/LHVs are responsible for educating the
community through Inter Personal
Communication (IPC).
 Health Education appeals to reason and
makes people think for themselves, while
PROPAGANDA is based on spoon feeding the
information and making people believe in a
message.
 Acquiring knowledge through H.E is Active,
while through Propaganda is Passive.
 In world of marketing and Advertisement, it is
believed that Propaganda is most powerful
instrument in influencing people.
 A strategy to influence policy makers when
they make laws and regulations, distribute
resources, and make other decisions that
affect the people’s life.
 The principal aims of Advocacy are to create
Policies, Reform Policies, and ensure the
implementation of Policies.
 Strategies of Advocacy include, direct
discussions to Policy makers, messages
through Media, or strengthening the ability of
local organizations to advocate.
 According to the concepts of health, life style &
behaviors play vital role in causation of health
problems.

 Almost 50% of the patients need not to come to


the health facilities, because their problem can
be prevented.

 Burden of morbidity & mortality can be


considerably reduced with appropriate health
education techniques.
1. To develop a sense of responsibility for health
conditions, as individuals, as members of
families & communities.
(Promotion of health, prevention of disease &
early diagnosis and management of illness).
2. To promote and wisely use the available
health services.
3. To be part of all education, and to continue
throughout whole span of life.
