Pitch

Name and Main Idea of The Magazine.

The magazine’s name is Interlude. This is because an interlude is an interval or break, which is the time in
which an entertainment magazine would be read, it makes reference to a musical term, as it is focused on
music.
It’s a general music magazine, which doesn’t focus on one specific genre but instead a range of all different
genre’s. Not only will it cover artists who have become successful in recent times, but also on artists who
were successful years ago and have resurfaced in recent years.
As well as mainly focusing on music, the magazine will also discuss biopic films, or documentaries that
relate to artists featured in the magazine: such as Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman.
Representations I Intend To Construct
The people I intend to take photographs of fit within the age range of the target audience, they are
therefore relatable to the audience, and will have similar interests, that could include music and movies
they like, as well as potentially, fashion sense.
For photographs of the female person, I will use a slightly low angle shot, and ensuring there is direct
gaze, this carries connotations of empowerment and confidence. For some of the photographs I will have
her holding a guitar as often female people are not shown to play their own instruments, I want to
subvert this stereotype by including a guitar as a prop in the photoshoot.
I would like to have the male person wearing quite casual comfortable clothing whilst sitting in a very
casual position, to create quite a calm, relaxed representation of him. I want to make sure he looks quite
happy and relaxed (to appeal to a fun-loving audience.) As male people on magazines are often shown to
look quite intimidating I want to subvert this.
How I Aim To Appeal To The Target Audience
In order to appeal to the target audience I intend on using an informal/conversational mode of
address as this gives the magazine an overall more casual feel and doesn't appear patronising, it
makes the magazines easier to read as it has a more conversational tone.
By using people who fit the target demographic for my photo shoot and locations that most people
would likely feel familiar with (such as, park and a woodland areas) it allows the target audience to be
able to relate to these people or places, it diminishes the distance between the audience and the
representations of the people in the magazine. It makes people feel that the people on the cover are
just like them, or similar.
The masthead and overall colour scheme will be bright, bold and eye-catching, this will give the
magazine quite a fun light-hearted feel, which should appeal to a fun-loving audience.
I want to ensure that my contents pages include quite a few pictures to make them more visually
interesting. As well as using the same colour scheme as on the front cover of the magazine.
I will also include references or links to the website/social media pages to allow the audience to
engage with the product more actively.
How would this be recognisable as a Hearst magazine?
The masthead will be positioned across the top of both magazines (where
it would be visible if it were being sold on a shelf in a shop). It will be in the
same font for each issue in order to create a sense of brand identity
between the issues.
I intend to use two medium shots for my front covers as this is generally
the kind of photograph Hearst use in their magazines.
I will also make sure the people on my front covers have direct gaze with
the camera.
I will make sure to include the standard codes and conventions magazines
use such as: a masthead, cover lines, main image, skyline, barcodes etc.
The one contrast I will create to the standard style of a Hearst magazine is,
that I will be using backgrounds with a more complex composition than a
single colour background that Hearst magazines would normally use.
The Front Covers
Issue One: Issue Two:

By using a similar
layout, the same
typographies and
colour schemes, I will
be able to create a
sense of brand
identity across the
two magazine
covers/contents
pages. It will make it
obvious that they are
the same magazine.
