APPLICATION OF

DIFFERENTIAL
EQUATIONS
“MIDDLE LIFE”

• Isaac Zapata.
• Georgina Cortez.
• Cristina Hernández.
Ecuaciones Diferenciales • Axel Rodríguez.
• Orlando Mata.
Key concepts
• Isotope: atom that belongs to the same chemical element as another, has its
same atomic number but different atomic mass
• Fossil: dead organic substance; that has been petrified by chemical and
geological processes.
• Carbon 14 Radioactive isotope of carbon that is used as a tracer in
biochemical research and in the technique of dating, which allows estimating
the age of fossils and other organic matter.
Differentiated equation
• A differential equation (ED) is an equation that relates non-trivially
to an unknown function and one or more derivatives of this
unknown function with respect to one or more independent
variables.
MIDDLE LIFE
• It is called half life at the time required for half of a substance to
disappear.
• The radioactive substances disintegrate with greater or lesser
rapidity, according to which one treats.
• In the Fossil Dating by the Radioactive Isotope Carbon-14 and its
resolution by the Runge-Kutta Method of 4th order.
• Dating: Determination of the date on which a thing arises or occurs
in the age of rocks, minerals, living beings or archaeological
remains.
• The term half-life of an isotope is used to measure the stability of a
radioactive substance, specifically,
• half-life is the time it takes for half the atoms present in a quantity
of substance to disintegrate. The ordinary differential equation can
be used for carbon-14 dating, the basis of this method is based on
the fact that a highly relevant chemical reaction occurs in the
Earth's atmosphere.
• The ratio between carbon-14 and ordinary carbon in the Earth's
atmosphere is constant and in general the proportion of carbon-14
present in any living organism is similar to that of the atmosphere,
however,
• when an organism dies it stops absorbing carbon -14, due to this,
over the years the proportion of carbon-14 present in the fossil of
the organism tends to decrease this fact is used by scientists to
establish the date on which the organism died.
Aplications.
Willard F. Libby
• The method for dating using carbon-14 was developed by Willard F.
Libby in 1955. To apply the method described, it must be taken into
account that the half-life of the carbon-14 isotope is approximately
5,600 years.
Deduction of the formula.

• The amount of a radioactive substance A, with respect to time, is

proportional to the amount of radioactive substance A.
Exercise 1.
• With this method we can find the half-life of a fossil, through the C-14
(radioactive carbon 14).5600 years ago it is said that c-14 originated, with this
method we will find the average age of a fossil containing 1/1000 (one
thousandth of c-14).
Application osf mining.
• Mining is the selective extraction fof minerals and other materials from the
earth’s crust from wich an economic beneficit can be obtained.
Archeologist have used pieces of burned Wood , or carbon foun on the site
to determine the antiquity of prehistoric painting and drawings captured in
the caves.
Exercice 2.
• To determine the approximate age of a piece of burned wood, it was found
that 90% of C-14 accumulated in living trees of the same type had
deteriorated.
