Clothing is defined as the coverings for the hands, feet and head. Articles carried rather
than worn, such as purses, are usually counted as accessories, while glasses or jewelry,

make-up and hairstyle, although contributes to the general message an individuals want to
relay in addition to his or her clothing choices, do not constitute clothing as such.

Clothing was introduced as a method of protecting the human body against extreme
weather conditions -strong winds, intense heat, cold and precipitation.
In particular, the weaves of clothes prevent the circulation of air around the skin and thus,
avoid the exit of the air reheated by the skin, which makes people feel uncomfortable and
cold.
Additionally, the clear weaves of clothing avoid the ultraviolet radiation of the sun and the
burns in the skin, protecting it, therefore, from the heat. Finally, more impermeable weaves
protect the human body from coming into contact with the water of rain or snow.
But people wear clothing for functional as well as social reasons. Wearing clothes also
carries specific cultural and social meanings. In numerous cultures, for instance, it is bad
sight to show to others parts of the human body anatomy and particularly .Religion,
customs and of course, particular historically important circumstances have shaped the way
different people in various times feel about clothing and exposure.
Moreover, clothing has been regarded as one of the best ways to distinguish social classes,
occupation, marital status and ethnic or religious affiliation. But in order to interpret
correctly the messages a particular set of clothes may transmit to others, one has to be
familiar with the translation of the specific code. Wearing white during a western funeral for
example is highly inappropriate, while eastern societies endorse such a colour selection for
mourning people.

Today, there are many materials with which clothes are made. A person can choose from
purchasing clothes made from natural origin materials, like silk, wool, and leather, but may
also select one for the man-made fibers extensively used in clothes manufacturing, like
nylon, polyester, Lycra and Gore-Tex. With the recent technological developments, there is
great speculation for the direction of future clothes.

A fashion professional knows fashion apparel as a unique product, one that reflects self-
concept, life-style, change , time and place. Above all fashion is a result of acceptance.

The duration of fashion’s importance is a critical fashion designers or manufacturers

concern. A fashion can be brief or of long duration. Once having identified this
characteristic, a designer is in a position to assess a fashions importance to the retail
inventory.

Fashion is classified into many types such as:

STYLE:

Style is the basic outline of any garment. When we add a different neckline and different
sleeves with some trimming here and there over a basic garment then the basic garment is
modified into a different look or a different outfit, this modification garment will become
fashion, when it is accepted by people.

style is a popular word in fashion and refers to a sub-division within fashion. it is that which
has certain characteristics that distinguish it from other designs. For example, the fashion
could be pleated skirt, yet the style is box pleat. They create styles which they hope will be
accepted.
CLASSICS:

When a fashion is constant or long lasting, such as, salwar kameez and saree, it is called
basic or classic. The salwar kameez and are part of fashion scene. In certain times, the basics
becomes the most important promotable fashion, but, in or out, they remain as a part of
the fashion scene. There are many outfits that fall into this classification, such as, chudidhar,
kurta, dupattas, shirt and trousers, plain or peated skirts, blazer and denims, etc. there are
general fashions that lasts for years. Which has changes in pattern, collar, lapels, pockets or
length of the garment.

Basics or classics are the outfits which stays in the fashion scene for a long period of time
that is from past to present and even in future it stands. When we watch old movie as well
as the new movies which is released just, we can see the saris and salwar kameez worn in it
may be with a slight change or modification accordingly.
Modern
Modern fashion design is divided into two basic categories:
Haute couture and ready-to-wear.

The haute couture collection is dedicated to certain customers and is custom sized to fit
these customers exactly. Every Haute Couture piece is made to measure for a single client.

Couture means dressmaking, sewing, or needlework and haute means elegant or

high, so the two combined imply excellent artistry with the fashioning of
garments. The purchase of a haute couture model garment is at the top level of hand
customized fashion design and clothing construction made by a couture design
house. A model haute couture garment is made specifically for the wearer's
measurements and body stance. The made to measure exclusive clothes are virtually
made by hand, carefully interlined, stay taped and fitted to perfection for each client.

Sales
Haute Couture pieces are highest quality pieces. All handmade, these pieces are made to
measure and require much skill and time. As such, this level of quality means high prices
and high-end customers. In other words, customers of Haute Couture pieces are generally in
the top percentile of wealth, as Haute Couture is the highest you can pay within the fashion
industry.
Haute Couture houses create a collection every summer and winter season. These
collections often set the stage for future fashion trends within the Prêt-à-Porter collections,
as these collections often take inspiration from high fashion.
Ready-to-wear or Prêt-à-Porter

These collections are made for many customers in different sizes. While they range in price
and quality, the overarching characteristic is that these collections are designed within the
bounds of standardized sizing.

These pieces are not meant to fit perfectly or require a tailor. They simply fit the majority of
people fairly well. Prêt-à-Porter collections are more often available pre-seasonally, catering
to climate and economic changes.

These collections are not made to order. The rate at which fashion companies are able to
produce Ready-to-Wear collections varies from Haute Couture in that Ready-to-Wear
collections are produced at faster rates, in higher quantities.

While they may be of high quality and take inspiration from Haute Couture lines, these
collections lack the exclusivity of Haute Couture. Customers could find these pieces for
example in retail or online shops.
TRADITIONAL

Clothing in India varies depending on the different ethnicity, geography, climate and cultural
traditions of the people of each region of India. Historically, male and female clothing has
evolved to elaborate costumes not only used in daily wear but also on festive occasions as
well as rituals and dance performances. India also has a great diversity in terms of weaves,
fibers, colours and material of clothing. Sometimes, color codes are followed in clothing
based on the religion and ritual concerned. The clothing in India also encompasses the wide

their respective tradition wear, is watched to celebrate the culture of every individual so
that everyone realizes how they come from different backgrounds but are still united.
FAD

A fad is a fashion that is very popular for only short time.

Fad are fashion that come quickly into public eye, are adopted with great zeal, peak early
and decline very fast.
Fads appeal to people who are searching for excitement or who wants to distinguish
themselves from other.
It is difficult to predict whether something will be a fad or how long it will last.
FASHION TREND

There are certain outfits which are in fashion now. The garment which are currently in
fashion scene are called fashion trend. This will be changing very often. The garment which
is liked by many people will be stitched bulky using better quality of fabric and trimming and
sold in the market, so that the garments are not only bought and worn by the upper class, it
can also affords the middle class, and then these dresses become fashion trends.

Fashion trends are influenced by several factors including cinema, celebrities, climate,
creative explorations, political, economical, social and technological.
Fashion forecasters can use this information to help determine growth or decline of a
