 A software which is developed to help the user to

perform specific tasks is called application
software. It is not limited to one particular
function.
 System Software?
 System software are set of programs that control and manage the

operation of computer hardware. It controls the usage of different

hardware components. It enables application program to execute
properly/ System software can do one or more of the following jobs:
 Saving data on disk.

 Making computer to work for us.

 Printing a document etc.

 Communicate with and controls the operation of peripheral devices.

 System Programing?

 Definition - What does System Programming mean? System programming

involves designing and writing computer programs that allow the computer
hardware to interface with the programmer and the user, leading to the
effective execution of application software on the computer system.
Commonly used operating system?
 The development of operating system has started since 1950’s and different

types of operating system have been developed so far by different

companies. The most commonly used operating system are DOS, : Linux,
Windows and Macintosh.
 Disk Operating System ( DOS )?

 The first PC Operating System (1981)

 Not a Multitasking OS, only one program could run at a time
 A command-line interface, no GUI.
 Early versions of Windows sat on top of DOS and used it to
communicate with the BIOS.
 Windows XP communicates directly with the BIOS, but allows
commands to be entered via a command prompt.
 Linux?
 Linux is the name of a popular computer operating system. It is the
most famous example of frees software and open source
development, as it is not only freely available, but also its underlying
source code is available to all and anyone can freely openly use it,
modify it and redistribute it.
 Windows?
 Microsoft windows is the name of several families of GUI operating

systems by Microsoft. Microsoft first introduced an operating environment

names Windows in response to the growing interest in graphical user
interfaces. Microsoft Windows came to dominate the World’s personal
computer market, overtaking Mac OS.
