STATEMENT OF CONVENTION

A. Reflects the writer’s certainty that no appeal to nonlinguistic


experience could possibly overthrow his assertion.
B. Can be verified only by reference to historical precedent, custom,
common usage.
C. May sound factual, but no amount of observation or measurement
will prove a statement of convention true.
D. One goes to dictionaries and reference works to verify conventional
statement.
E. Our calendar and system for telling time are arbitrarily imposed and
agreed upon. It is a statement of convention to assert that the time
2:25 p.m October 23, 2007 even though it sounds like a statement
of fact.
EXAMPLES OF STATEMENT OF
CONVENTION

A. Import liberalization means allowing foreign goods to


enter Philippine markets and directly compete with
domestic products.
B. The rose belongs to the genus Rosa of the family
Rosaceae.
STATEMENT OF FACT

A. Represents the writer’s feeling of assurance that the test of truth or falsity
can be readily determine and that there is already general agreement about
the truth of the statement itself.
B. A statement of fact claims to be true in an objective, measurable way.
C. Statement of fact are subject to confirmation by observation. Equally
important to the critical thinking process is that observation may not
verify the truth of the statement.
D. Statement of fact are ordinarily quantifiable; i.e., some kind of
measurable numerical value is linked to the statement.
EXAMPLES OF STATEMENT OF
FACT

A. According to the Minister of Defense, NPA armed insurgents now total


some 16,000 men and women.
B. Roses grow best in soil made of ¾ clay and ¼ sand and loam.
STATEMENT OF HYPOTHESIS OR
OPINION

A. Reflects the writer’s uncertainty about the possibility of producing


satisfactory proofs of soundness and his recognition that this agreement
is more likely than not
B. A hypothesis sets boundaries on the database. It narrows its scope to an
observable, measurable set and seeks only to explain the interactions
within the last.
C. Typically you will find a hypothesis looks to such relationship as cause
and effect, correlations (positive or negative ), or explanations for the way
thing are.
EXAMPLE OF STATEMENT OF
HYPOTHESIS OR OPINION

A. These statements go to the heart of our values and beliefs.

prove the truth of such a statement. In deed, no proof is possible. There
is no disputing or debating preference; consequently, they do not carry
any weight in discussion.
EXAMPLES OF STATEMENT OF
PREFERENCE

A. Roses are more beautiful, smell sweeter and are easier to grow than any
other flower.
B. The Aquino government should have toughened its stand against the
burgeoning insurgency.
