• its not true that reading is an effortless
task, its a complex cognitive process, its
also a highly visual because it involves
the transmission of messages through
optic nerves, you can also locate the
main ideas, summarize, paraphrase,
note details etc.
• Reading is a language skill, which can
be develop through constant practice.

PROCESS
Pre-reading stage
• Induce the readers motivation to read
and to activate their schema or
background knowledge.
While reading stage
• you may reread the text until you finally
understand the meaning.
Post reading stage
• in the last stage you have to check your
understanding in the text.
BASIC READING
SKILLS
What is Rapid Reading?
• aims to locate specific information or
main ideas in a very short span of time
example of this includes skimming,
scanning which are both pre reading
skills.
A. What is Skimming?
• it's a type of quick reading which aims
to get the main idea and to get an
overview of the material.
THE TECHNIQUES
• Use your finger as a guide when reading
accross the line.
• Focus more on the first and last
sentences of each paragraph; they
usually contain the main idea of the
text.
B. Locating the main idea
• is another reading skills, it involves the
identification of the central message of
a reading selection.
THE TECHNIQUES
• Identify the topic or the subject of the main idea.
• Take note of the transitional devices such as thus,
therefore, to conclude and to sum up as they may
signal the main idea.
• Validate your identified main idea by analyzing if
all supporting details, directly or indirectly
support it.
C. What is scanning?
• it's a quick reading strategy which aims
to get specific information for a given
text.
• Is a skill where a reader looks over a
material and focuses on the information
he/she finds.

• It's a reading skill that involves
condensing a lengthy text into a shorter
passage which usually 15-30 percent of
the source material, it's essential that
the thesis statement or topic sentence is
included in the summary.
B. PARAPHRASING
• Before you excerpt, you have to draw on
your background knowledge by looking
at the title this is the paraphrasing, it
aims to induce readers motivation to
read and no activate their schema or
background knowledge.

• Refers to the process of deducting facts
and ideas not directly expressed in the
text, It also known as READING
BETWEEN LINES this skill includes
making generalizations, inferences and
conclusions. Applied during the while
reading.
CRITICAL THINKING
• Refers to the close and through evaluation of
the claims in the text terms of relevance,
validity, and the logic. This skills includes
distinguish facts from opinions and
detecting logical fallacies as with inferential
reading, critical happens in the while
reading stage.
