Introduction to Barter System
A Barter system is an old method of exchange. This
system has been used for centuries and long before
money was invented. People exchanged services and
goods for other services and goods in return. Today,
bartering has made a comeback using techniques
that are more sophisticated to aid in trading; for
instance, the Internet.
History
The history of bartering dates all the way back to 6000 BC.
Introduced by Mesopotamia tribes, bartering was adopted
by Phoenicians. Babylonian's also developed an improved
bartering system. Goods were exchanged for food, tea,
weapons, and spices. Salt was another popular item
exchanged. Salt was so valuable that Roman soldiers'
salaries were paid with it. In the Middle Ages, Europeans
travelled around the globe to barter crafts and furs in
exchange for silks and perfumes.

change.

no longer need, and services you can perform, for other’s items and
services.

environmental change. By trading, you reduce your carbon footprint
and help prevent usable goods from entering landfills. With Xchange,

Inspire
We desire to INSPIRE people to build trade and barter
communities.
Xchange helps you to get to know your neighbors and
people in your community, and cultivates a more
connected, gratifying way to interact and get the things you
want.
Transform
We desire to TRANSFORM the current ‘throwaway’ and ‘buy new’
culture into a self-sustaining community-culture, whereby people
are not only connected with the ‘haves’ and ‘wants’ of those around
them, but also with tangible ways to create environmental
betterment.
We hope to generate a large-scale behavioural change in the way our
culture consumes material goods, and impart a resource saving
ethic that builds on the vitality of the ‘Sharing Economy’.

Working
Step 1. Upload an item or service by snapping a photo and writing a
description.
Step 2. Browse and filter by anything from categories, distance,
value, others desires, and Facebook Friends.
Step 3. Pick an item or service you like and propose a trade by mix
and matching to find the ideal offer.
Step 4. If you get a Xchange notification, chat with that person,
meet-up, and make it happen! We guide you through the process
and make it as simple and direct as possible.
