Academic stress and

its effects on S.T.E.M.


Students of Holy Child
College of Davao
Introduction

What’s this?

Stress is a feeling of both emotional and


physical tension. It is from a form of
thought caused by frustration, anger, or
nervousness. A respond of one's mind to
any matter of demand or threat
According to “Stress (biology)” (n.d), it
states that "Stress can alter memory
functions, reward, immune function,
metabolism and susceptibility to diseases.
Definitions of stress differ.
◦ Though stress doesn't really exist in
reality, it is only because of the
thoughts that keeps on mumbling
inside our mind that wants us to
have ideas that stress really do exist.
“ Ideas, thoughts, and unimaginable
phrases crawls throughout our
minds and it will make us believe
that stress exists in the reality of the
world.
◦ Globally, a study from Gomez, e.t. a.l.
(n. d) in North America states that
tutorial environments will be
extremely competitive, and students
should admit their brick talents to
handle school-related stress with
success.
◦ In New York City, nearly half of all
Americans report that stress has a
negative impact on both their personal
and professional lives.
◦ Meanwhile in the Philippines, Some
Filipinos blamed Aquino and Duterte
for continuing their plan to add the K
to12 program into our education
system in which has caused them to
be stressed.
Moreover, particularly in Saint
Theresa’s College, Algoet (2003)
presented that the greatest number
of students problem that caused
stressed was found in areas of
personal adjustments, school life, and
the financial status
Furthermore, in the University of
Mindanao, Philippines particularly in
Matina, Davao City many students
are so much affected by
stress. Although students have
different courses, they encounter
almost all the same problems and all
of them experience different stress
levels.
Purpose of the study

◦ The purpose of this phenomenological


study will be to discover, understand, and
assess the effects of academic stress for
S.T.E.M students at Holy Child College of
Davao. At this stage in the research, the
effects of academic stress will be generally
defined as one of the factor that prevents
the students to achieve academic success.
Research objectives

◦ a. To know how they cope up with stress


among the Stem Students at Holy Child
College of Davao

◦ b. To know the significant difference of


stress among STEM Students when
respondents are analyzed by Sex, Grade
Level.

◦ c. To identify various aspects causing stress


on the basis of the findings of the study.
Research questions

◦ 1. What are the factors that would lead to


Academic stress among the grade 11 S.T.E.M.
students of Holy Child College of Davao?

◦ 2. Are they affected by a high or low level of


stress?

◦ 3. Does this kind of stress affect the pupil’s


academic success?
◦ 4. Is there a significance difference in
the level of mental stress of the
respondents when data are grouped
according to gender and socio-
economic status?

◦ 5. How long did they experience


stress?
Research Gap

◦ Stress can be considered positive or as well


negative based on how you manage it.
There are causes/factors, indicators and
results, on which more research are needed.

◦ And these factors, indicators and results


may come differently from institution to
institution, providing that there is need for
further research in this area
