REVIEW: QUADRATIC EQUATION

• A quadratic equation is an
equation that can be written in
the form:
• ax 2 + bx + c = 0 (Standard Form)
• where a, b, and c are real
numbers, with a ≠ 0.
ZERO-FACTOR PROPERTY

• If a and b are real numbers and if

ab = 0, then a = 0 or b = 0.
• That is, if the product of two
numbers is 0, then at least one of
the numbers must be 0. One
number must be 0, but both may
be 0.
EXAMPLE: SOLVE EACH EQUATION:

1. 2x 2+ 5x - 3 = 0
2. x - 5x = - 6

3. 4p 2 + 40 = 26 p

SAMPLE 4:

•The perimeter of a
rectangle is 44 cm. The
area of the rectangle is
117 cm . Find the length

of the shorter side of the

rectangle.
ANSWER:
The perimeter of a rectangle is 44 cm. The
area of the rectangle is 117 cm2. Find the
length of the shorter side of the rectangle.
Let one side be x, therefore other side is (44 − 2x) ÷ 2
= 22 – x
x(22  x)  117
22 x  x 2  117 x x
x 2  22 x  117  0
( x  9)( x  13)  0
x  9 or 13 (rej)

Are both answers acceptable? Ans : The shorter side is 9 cm

SAMPLE 5:

• A rectangular swimming pool

measures 25 m by 6 m. It is
surrounded by a path of
uniform width. If the area of
the path is 102 m2, find the
width of the path.
ANSWER:
A rectangular swimming pool measures 25 m by 6 m.
It is surrounded by a path of uniform width. If the
area of the path is 102 m2, find the width of the path.

Let the width be x. Therefore, length of path = 25 +

2x, breadth of path = 6 + 2x
Area of pool = 25 x 6 = 150 m2
(25  2 x)(6  2 x)  252 25 + 2x

150  50 x  12 x  4 x 2  252 6 + 2x 25 m
6m
4 x 62 x  102  0
2

2 x 2  31x  51  0
Ans: The width of the path is 1.5 m
( x  17)(2 x  3)  0
x  1.5 or -17(rej)
The Pythagorean Theorem p 402
In a right triangle, the sum of the squares
of the lengths of the two legs is equal to
the square of the length of the
hypotenuse.
(leg a)2 + (leg b)2 = (hypotenuse)2

hypotenuse

leg b
SAMPLE PROBLEM 1:

• Kaye and Dexter leave their office,

Kaye traveling north and Dexter
traveling east. When Dexter is 1 mi
farther than Kaye from the office, the
distance between them is 2 mi more
than Kaye’s distance from the office.
Find their distances from the office and
the distance between them.
SAMPLE PROBLEM 2:

• Find the length of the shorter

leg of a right triangle if the
longer leg is 10 miles more than
the shorter leg and the
hypotenuse is 10 miles less than
twice the shorter leg.
The Pythagorean Theorem
Find the length of the shorter leg of a right
triangle if the longer leg is 10 miles more than
the shorter leg and the hypotenuse is 10 miles
less than twice the shorter leg.
1.) Represent
Read and reread the problem. If we let
x = the length of the shorter leg, then
x + 10 = the length of the longer leg and
2x – 10 = the length of the hypotenuse.

2 x - 10
x

x + 10 Continued
2.) Translate
By the Pythagorean Theorem,
(leg a)2 + (leg b)2 = (hypotenuse)2

3.) Solve x2 + (x + 10)2 = (2x – 10)2

x2 + (x + 10)2 = (2x – 10)2
x2 + x2 + 20x + 100 = 4x2 – 40x + 100 (multiply the binomials)
2x2 + 20x + 100 = 4x2 – 40x + 100 (simplify left side)
0 = 2x2 – 60x (subtract 2x2 + 20x + 100 from both sides)
0 = 2x(x – 30) (factor right side)

x = 0 or x = 30 (set each factor = 0 and solve)

4.) Interpret
Check: Remember that x is suppose to
represent the length of the shorter side.
So, although x = 0 satisfies our equation, it
cannot be a solution for the problem we
were presented.
If we let x = 30, then x + 10 = 40 and 2x – 10
= 50. Since 302 + 402 = 900 + 1600 = 2500 =
502, the Pythagorean Theorem checks
out.
State:
The length of the shorter leg is 30 miles.
