Intra-City Road Transport

• Roads in Delhi are maintained by Municipal


Corporation of Delhi (MCD), New Delhi Municipal
Council (NDMC), Delhi Cantonment Board (DCB),
Public Works Department (PWD) and Delhi
Development Authority (DDA)
• At 1749 km of road length per 100 km², Delhi has
one of the highest road densities in India
• Major roadways include the Ring Road and the Outer
Ring Road, which had a traffic density of 110,000
vehicles per day in 2001
• Total road length of Delhi was 28,508 km including
388 km of National Highways. Major road-based
public transport facilities in Delhi are provided by
DTC buses, auto-rickshaws, taxis

BUSES

• Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) operates the world's


largest fleet of CNG-powered buses. After Pune, Delhi
was the second city in India to have an operational Bus
rapid transit (BRT) system.
• Buses are the most popular means of transport catering
to about 60% of Delhi's total demand.
• Other than regular routes, buses also travel on Railway
Special routes; Metro Feeder routes. Mudrika (Ring) and
Bahri Mudrika (Outer Ring) routes along Ring and Outer-
Ring road respectively are amongst the longest intra-city
bus routes in the world
• The DTC has started introducing air-conditioned buses
and brand new low-floor buses (with floor height of
400 mm) on city streets to replace the conventional
buses.
• At present the fleet size of buses in Delhi is as follows:

2. Delhi Integrated Multimodal Transit System -1157

DELHI TRANSPORT CORPORATION

• Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) is the main public


transport operator of Delhi. It is one of the largest CNG-
powered bus service operator in the world
• The Delhi Transport Corporation was incorporated in
May 1948 by the Indian government for local bus
services.
• Delhi Transport Corporation operates on many routes in
Delhi and neighbouring States. The mofussil buses
operate around 46 depots out of which 18 depots are of
old DTC buses and rest have low floor buses

• Delhi Transport Corporation services in Delhi has vastly


distributed network of bus services. It connects almost
every part of Delhi with this network of buses
• The most Prominent of these being the “Mudrika” Seva
services interconnecting all parts of the city with a great
frequency of buses
• Under DTC bus service,there are other bus services too
like Mudrika Seva,High Capacity Bus Service
MUDRIKA (RING ROAD)SEVA
• The Mudrika Seva (Ring Road bus service) is one of the most
popular bus services in Delhi, India started by the Delhi
Transport Corporation (DTC)
• Mudrika Seva is based on the Delhi ring road with major
stops at AIIMS, Lajpat Nagar, Sarai Kale Khan, ITO, Delhi Gate,
Kashmiri Gate, Delhi University, Model Town
• This service has a very high frequency and a lifeline for many
commuters. It also is the second longest route operated by
Delhi Transport Cooperation.
• The Outer Mudrika Service (OMS) is the longest route
operated by Delhi Transport Cooperation. It covers the
distant parts of Delhi.It has its major stops at Anand Vihar
ISBT, NH 24, Sarai Kale Khan,R.K. Puram, Dhaula
Kuan,Pitampura, Dilshad Garden and back to Anand Vihar. It
takes almost 6 hours to complete this circular Trip. The total
distance covered is 110 km.
MUDRIKA (RING ROAD)SEVA
TAXIS

• Taxis are an integral part of Delhi public transport.


The Indian Tourism Ministry and various private
owners operate most taxis.
• The Tourism Ministry grants private companies
permits to operate taxis.
• Some companies provide an on-call radio taxi
service, which is slightly more expensive than
conventional Black and Yellow taxis.
BICYCLE

• Cycling is not very commonly used means of


transportation in Delhi
• Cycling accounts for 10-12% of trips in the city.
• Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has started a Public
Bicycle Sharing(PBS) scheme at selected metro
station for providing last mile connectivity to
commuters
• Currently there are no specific cycle lanes in Delhi
but there is a proposed elevated cycle track that
would come up between Geeta colony and Shastri
park(3.3Km) in East Delhi
Major Arteries Of Delhi Transportation
System
• Delhi, a major metropolitan region of India, is
connected to various parts of country through
several national highways.
• Most of the highways from Delhi lead to Haryana or
Uttar Pradesh and continue from there.
• Delhi is directly connected to the state of Haryana by
The Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway and National Highway
8 to city of Gurgaon, National Highway 2 to the city
of Faridabad, National Highway 1 to the city of
Panipat, and National Highway 10 to the city of
Rohtak. Delhi is directly connected to the state of
Uttar Pradesh by the DND Flyway to the city of Noida
and National Highway 24 to Ghaziabad.
INNER RING ROAD

• Inner Ring Road is one of the most important "state


highways" in Delhi. It is a 51 km long circular road, which
connects important areas in Delhi.
• Owing to more than 2 dozen grade-separators/flyovers,
the road is almost signal-free. The road is 8-laned with a
few bottlenecks at certain stretches, which are being
removed.
OUTER RING ROAD

• Outer Ring Road is another major artery in Delhi.


• The road is 6-8 lane and has grade-separators and a large
number are under construction as a part of project to
make the artery signal free.
• The road along with the ring road forms a ring which
intersects all the National Highways passing through Delhi.
