What can be concluded from the pictures

Realists believe that reality exists independent of the


human mind. The ultimate reality is the world of physical

CRITIQUE ON REALISM
Shortsighted and dehumanizing, pandering
primarily to material concerns
- Realism received its thrust (strength/based) from the
industrial and technological age. From 19th century
to present, school see their major task in training for
professionals and technicians in a society where
professionalism and technical skills are so highly
praised.
Biased toward social control and social

- Scientific realist dominate over religious realist in
maintaining a materialistic conception of human
nature that is biased toward social control and social

People must adapt and adjust to reality

- Aristotle and Aquinas tended to see the universe in


terms of an independent reality with its own internal
and systematic order.

dreams and desires have to subsumed under its

Realism tends to ignore totality

- If we truly want to understand the human being in the


world, then we must consider the totality or entirety of
the individual.

conditioned by preconceived notions (correct point of
view) about the universe.
Students measured up to the curriculum

- “The average dull student” as pointed by Whitehead,
such average students constitute a majority of the
school age population and realist seem more
concerned with the necessary of students measuring
up to the standard curriculum than with seeing them
as individuals.
Dehumanizing Effect of Realism

- Students come to be seen in terms of subservience to


a superior entity, such as the curriculum or standards
of excellence.
Controversy over liberal and vocational
education
- Although many realist support the need for both, they
seem to view liberal education as intensive studies in
art and sciences for superior students and believe
that slower students should be given narrower
technical vocational training.

and educational theory.
Realism Emphasized on Objective Test

- Competency test, teacher effectiveness test,


student performance test, “No child left
behind” Act (2001) - relies heavily on testing
techniques to sort and classify students.

- Such trend can provide valuable objective


support to those concerned with educational
quality, but some critics argue that such test
are culturally biased and are punitive with
regard to some social group.
“The Hardwork and Discipline” Syndrome
and the Emphasized on Factual Truth.
- Rousseau thinkers: people are basically good,
energetic, and naturally inquisitive. Education should
not be forced on people, rather, it should be made
available in a palatable and enjoyable fashion.
Positive Aspects of Realism

- Realist philosophy of education have


strong support from many educators,
parents, business leaders, religious
institutions, and grassroots America.

- Realist approach appear to favor a no-


nonsense education that concentrate on
things most people consider important.
Positive Aspects of Realism

- A large percentage of public believes that lack of


discipline is the number one problem found in school
today, and the emphasis on discipline in realist
philosophies of educations appeals to this sector of
the public.

- The emphasize on discipline includes not only


behaviour but also a discipline approach to subject
matter, learning and life activities.

- More schools are following realist education


principles than those of any other single philosophy.
