Dolichos Bean
 Dolichos bean, Dolichos lablab, belongs to the family
Leguminosae and Chromosome no. 2n = 24.

 Dolichos Bean is originated in India/ South East Asia.

It is also called Hyacinth bean, Lab lab, Indian bean,
Pole bean, Australian pea and Sem in Hindi.

 It is a good nitrogen fixer and grown as a cover crop or

fodder. Tender pods are cooked and eaten like green
beans. Young leaves are eaten raw in salads and older
leaves are cooked like spinach. Mature seeds are
fermented to produce Tempe.
Dolichos Bean
 The mature and dark colored seeds have trypsin inhibitor.
On heating the seeds, Trypsin Inhibitor is broken down
into toxic Cyanogenic glycoside which is soluble in boiling
water.

 Therefore, it is necessary to boil the mature seeds in water

before consumption.

 Despite many good attributes, the crop has remained

unexploited owing to low productivity, Photo-sensitivity,
Long duration. The consumer preference also varies with
pod size. shape, color and aroma.
Growth and Habitat
 It is a perennial herb, frequently grown as an annual.
 Flowers are white, pink, red or purple colored, present
in clusters of 4-5.
 It is generally self-pollinated.
 Pods are oblong, flat and broad, firm-walled and
fibrous and contain 4-6 seeds.
 It is mainly grown in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh,
Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Dolichos Bean
 Arka Vijay - IIHR, Bangalore
Plants are dwarf, Photo-insensitive and yields about
120 q/ha in 80 days.

 Arka Jay - IIHR, Bangalore

Plants are dwarf type.
Yields about 120 q/ha in 75 days.

 Pusa Early Prolific - IARI, New Delhi

Plants bear early, long, thin pods. Suitable for sowing
in early Spring and Autumn seasons.
 Pusa Sem- 1 – IARI, New Delhi
Vine type, bears dark green, very tender 15-16 cm long
pods. Highly tolerant to anthracnose. It yields about 130
q/ha.
 Pusa Sem - 2– IARI, New Delhi
Highly tolerant to anthracnose and yields about
170q/ha.
 CO-1 – TNAU, Coimbatore
Plant height about 60-70 cm. Seeds are bold and black
in color. It yields about 160 q/ha in 140 days.
 CO-2 – TNAU, Coimbatore
Seeds are medium, ovate and black. Plant height about
60 cm.
 Hebbal Avare-3 – UAS, Bangalore
Plant height about 65-75 cm, seeds are brown, round
and small. Yields 80-100 q/ha in 90-100 days.

 Wal Konkan-1 – KKVP, Dapoli

Plant height about 40-45 cm. Seeds are bold with
brown coat color. Resistant to Yellow Mosaic Virus.
Yields about 90- 100 q/ha in 110-115 days.

 Kalyanpur Type-2 – VRC, Kalyanpur

Vine type. Seeds are black, slimy and large. Yields
about 160 q/ha in 100 days.
 Soil
Well drained loamy soil with pH range of 6.5-8.5 is
suited for cultivation.

 Climatic Requirement
Cool Season crop well adopted for tropical and sub-
tropical climates. Requires about 630- 890 mm of annual
rainfall.

 Seed rate
25 kg/ha for Bush type and 10 kg/ha for Climbing type
is required.

 Seed treatment
Treat the seeds with Carbendezim or Thiram @ 2g/kg of
seed 24 hrs before sowing.
 Preparation of Field and Sowing
Plough the land to a fine tilth. Sow the seeds manually
by dibbling method by keeping the 45 x 10 cm spacing.

 Irrigation
Irrigation should be done immediately after sowing and
on 3rd day, thereafter once in a week. Flowering and Pod
development stages are the critical stages for irrigation.

 Intercultural operations
Hoeing and weeding can be done as and when necessary.
Staking is necessary in pole type varieties.
Fertilizer Requirement

Fertilizers Irrigated Rainfed

FYM 20 t/ha 20 t/ha

Nitrogen 20 kg/ha 12.5 kg/ha

Phosphorous 50 kg/ha 25 kg/ha

Potassium 50 kg/ha 25 kg/ha

Plant Protection
 Pod borer – Heliothis armigera
Pod borer can be controlled by spraying Carbaryl 50
WP thrice at fortnightly intervals at the rate of 2 g/lit.

 Sucking pests
Sucking pests can be controlled by spraying
Dimethoate 30 EC 1 ml/lit at 15 days interval to control
aphids and other insects.

 Powdery mildew
Powdery mildew can be controlled by spraying
Wettable sulphur 2 g/litre.
Harvesting
 Pods are harvested when they are green, tender, and
before they become fibrous. In bush type varieties,
crop is ready for first harvesting in 2 months and in
pole type varieties take 3 months.

Yield
 Pole type : 10 – 12 t/ha
 Bush type : 8 – 10 t/ha
