Music of Mindoro

Mindoro is an island
located in southwestern
Luzon.

Two provinces:
• Occidental Mindoro
• Oriental Mindoro.
• Tagalog- main
language of
Mindoro
• Hanunuo-
language spoken
by the
Mangyans.

1. Ratagnon- a tribe occupying the
southernmost tip of Mindoro
2. Alangan- a group that occupies the
northern part of both Oriental and
Occidental Mindoro
3. Iraya- a group of people based in the
upland part of Northwest Mindoro
What are the different types of vocal
music in Mindoro?
• Iyaya- lullaby
• Ayung or Ngayung- ritual chant

• Pamuybuyen (legend)- means “fear
of water”
Ambahan- is one of the
indigenous vocal music of
Mindoro. It is a rhythmic poetic
expression of seven-syllable lines
with rhythmic end-syllables. It is
often presented as a chant and
inscribed in the bamboo tubes
called luka.

the Mangyans for “song”.
