Azimuth and Altitude:

CLIMATOLOGY
Altitude

Angle of Incidence:

CLIMATOLOGY
Where delta (d)– is difference
between wall azimuth and sun
azimuth

Gama(γ) – Wall altitude

Cos Beta(β) = cosd x cosγ

CLIMATOLOGY– LEC 4 SEM XI

Example : To find d–
Find suns position :
1. Sun Azimuth -Sun position at
3.00 pm in march (254 ˚)
2. Wall azimuth – Wall is facing
west (270 ˚)
To calculate Delta Difference
Altitude between wall azimuth and sun
= 270- 254= 16

CLIMATOLOGY
To find γ – Sun altitude at 11 AM In
march (45˚)

β(Angle of incidence) =
Cos β = Cos d x Cos γ
Azimuth Cos β = Cos 16 x Cos 45
= -0.95 x 0.52 = -0.49

β = 60.7˚

Solar Azimuth:
North -0˚ or 360˚
East - 90˚
South – 180˚
West – 270˚

CLIMATOLOGY
Horizontal shadow angle –d
Same as Angle of incidence
Vertical shadow angle (ε)– tan γ(altitude)
Difference between wall azimuth and sun azimuth
x sec d ( difference between wall azimuth
and sun azimuth)
Considering same example , wall facing west
1. Sun Azimuth -Sun position at 3.00 pm in
Considering same example
march (254 ˚)
Wall facing West
2. Wall azimuth – Wall is facing west (270 ˚)
Vertical shadow angle( tanε) = tan 45 x sec
d = 270- 254= 16˚
16
= 1.61 x 1.04 = 1.67
= 59˚

Shading mask of Vertical shading devices: Using shadow angle
protractor

CLIMATOLOGY
To derive shading mask of vertical
shading devices overlay over the
protractor
Sun’s angle can be derived from d (
derived in Angle of incidence)

This method is more effective if one side of PLOTTING OF LEFT FIN

elevation has to be calculated like east or west
