QUARTILES

OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify the different divisions of the quartiles.

2. Define and illustrate quartiles.

3. Calculate the quartiles of an ungrouped data.

 Quartiles are the values that divide a set of data into four
equal parts.
 Twenty five percent(25%) falls below the first
Quartile(Q1), fifty percent(50%) falls below the second
Quartile(Q2), seventy five percent(75%) falls below the
third Quartile(Q3).
 The second Quartile(Q2) is equal to the median.
 For an ungrouped data, quartiles are determined by
arranging the given data in a descending or ascending
order and picking the approximate value.
 Q1= n/4 ; Q2 = 2n/4 ; Q3 = 3n/4
 How many months are there in a year?

 How many months are there in a quarter?

 Which months make up 1st quarter? 2nd

quarter? 3rd quarter? 4th quarter?
 4 cases to consider in solving quartiles

 Case 1. n is odd and ½ (n – 1) is odd

 Case 2. n is odd and ½ (n – 1) is even

 Case 3. n is even and n is divisible by 4

 Case 4. n is even and n is not divisible by 4

 Q1 = ¼ (n + 1) quantity

 Q2 = ½ (n + 1 ) quantity

 Q3 = ¾ (n + 1 ) quantity

 Example : Find the Q1, Q2, and Q3 of the ff. set

of scores.
 30, 12, 10, 16, 18, 24, 29, 27, 22, 14, 15
 Q1 = mean of [¼ (n+1) – ½ ] and [¼ (n+1)+ ½] quantities

 Q2 = ½ (n + 1) quantity

 Q3 = mean of [ ¾ (n+1) – ½ ] and [ ¾(n+1)+ ½] quantities

 Example : Find the Q1, Q2, and Q3 of the ff. set

 30, 12, 10, 16, 18, 24, 29, 27, 22, 14, 15, 25, 28
 Q1 = mean of ¼ n and ¼ n + 1 quantities

 Q2 = mean of ½ n and ½ n + 1 quantities

 Q3 = mean of ¾ n and ¾ n + 1 quantities
