Mahiyam
The Concept
• The connection between the Macrocosm and the Microcosm is very spiritual and subtle. The
relationship is very evident and experiential. There is a commonality between the largest of the
large and the tiniest amongst the tiny. This common factor is described as energy or Shakti. This
energy exists in the universe as well as in the cells and atoms that is invisible to one’s eye. The
Ancient Hindu texts of Katha Upanishad describe this phenomenon as Anor Aniyam Mahato
Mahiyam. This translates that the God is smaller than the smallest and greater than the greatest.
• This piece of Art depicts, demonstrates and reveals the above mentioned idea. It unifies the
largest to the smallest. It is made of the same material and begins its form from as a set of
congruent fractal triangles taking a shape of an octagon , which signifies, in a sense signifies the 8
directions that a human being understands. But as it reduces its size to a smaller shapes of
Octagon, it starts loosing its sense of direction to become a zero or hollow, which again signifies
the direction in space. Technically there are no directions in space.
• Each of these triangles are made as a result of a fractal, which also has a similar set of Triangles
on it body, right from the biggest one to the smallest one. This also signifies the aspect of
expansion and contraption, depicting the pattern of energy flow, the breathing in and out of the
universe. Each of these triangle fractals are made with single sheet of paper, having smaller set of
triangles overlaying them, depicting divisibility to infantilism.
Material &Medium
• The material used over here is a simple sheet of paper, acrylic colors
to shade the paper with colourful patterns of the universe and the
medium used here is a form of folding called as Origami.
Technique and Construct
• The Technique is to fold a square sheet of paper into a fractal ,
inspired by the model of J.C.Nolan’s : Andrea’s Rose
