WHAT AND WHY?

Energy plus

ENERGY SIMULATION
 Energy Plus is an energy analysis/energy simulation and thermal load
simulation program.

ENERY SIMULATION-BUILDING SIMULATION

What is Energy Simulation?

 Building energy simulation also called building modeling(or energy modeling in

context)

 Energy models will output building energy use predictions in typical end-use
categories.

Heating

Cooling

Lighting

Plug and process

 In addition to energy units, most software includes utility rates input, and can
predict energy cost.

 It is also used to evaluate the payback of green energy solutions like solar
panels, wind turbines and high efficiency appliances
z
ENERGY SIMULATION
What is Energy Simulation?
A typical energy model will have inputs for
 Climate
 Envelope
 Internal gains from lighting ,equipments and occupants.
 Heating,cooling and ventilation systems.
 Schedules of occupants, equipments and lighting.
WHY?
 Energy savings measures can be calculated using simple spreadsheets
and a wide variety of software applications are available.
 Building consume roughly one-third of all the energy consumed nationally
every year-much of this energy is consumed maintaining the thermal
conditions inside the building and lighting.
 Simulations can and has played a significant role in reducing the energy
consumptions of buildings.
z
ENERGY SIMULATION
 ENERGY SIMULATION - The building is built from its component parts on a
computer and a simulation is performed by taking the building through the
weather conditions of an entire year.
 In a way, building simulation is a way to quantitatively predict the future and
thus has considerable value.

 Building simulation is commonly divided into 2 categories.

Load design
Energy analysis
 The common phrase for energy simulation when energy is involved is Energy
Simulation.
Load design used to determine:
 Air conditioning loads(the amount of cooling/heating energy needed by a
space/system/building)
 Volumetric air flow requirements(the amount of air needed to cool/heat a
space)
 Equipment capacities(since equipment may condition multiple space)
z
ENERGY SIMULATION
 Supply temperatures.
 Hydronic plant capacities.
 Similarities and differences between equipment options for heating and
cooling a space.

Energy analysis is used to:

 Predict the monthly energy consumption.
 Predict the annual energy cost.
 Annual CO2 emissions.
 Compare and contrast
different efficiency
options.
 Determine lifecycle pay-
back on various options.
z
ENERGY SIMULATION
What do we need before getting started with Energy simulation?

 Building location and geometry.

 Building materials(walls,windows, shading co-efficients)

 General operation of the building

 All interior load values( Lighting, plug load, occupants number and activity
level)

 Zoning Requirements

System types(is it constant

volume or VAV?DX coils or

chilled water?)-if you don’t

know the system type, you

can use the model to

Describe what’sbest!
z
ENERGY SIMULATION
 Basic concept of sequential simulation
z
ENERGY SIMULATION
Besides the Energy consumption, simulation software tools can also
be used to calculate,

 Indoor temperatures

 Needs for heating and cooling

 Consumption needs of HVAC system

 Natural lighting needs of the occupants

 Interior comforts of the inhabitants.

 Levels of ventilation.

Main Advantages of simulation includes:

 Study the behavior of the system without building it.

 Results are accurate in general, compared to analytical model.

 Help to find un-expected phenomenon, behavior of the system.

 Easy to perform
z
ENERGY SIMULATION
Main Dis- advantage:

 Expensive to build a simulation model.

 Model building requires special training.

 Expensive to conduct simulation.

 Sometimes it is difficult to interpret the simulation results.

Energy plus is a whole building energy simulation program that

engineers, architects, researchers used to model both energy
consumption for,

 Heating

 Cooling

 Lighting

 Plug and process loads and

 Water use in buildings

 Integrated, simultaneous solution.

 Heat-balanced based solution

 Sub-hourly,user-definable time steps

 Combined heat and mass transfer

 Advanced fenestration models

 Illuminance and glare calculation

 Component based HVAC

 A large number of built in HVAC and lighting control strategies

z
ENERGY PLUS
Energy plus is
 Fully integrated building &HVAC simulation program
 Based on best features of BLAST (building load analysis and system
thermodynamics) & DOE-2 (design of experiments) plus new capabilities.
 Simulation engine only
 Interface available from private software developers.
Criteria Descriptions:
 Built – in baseline model:
Auto generate appropriate and certified baseline models .To avoid creating
second model for baseline and minimize human errors.
 Interaction with design tools:
 Talk with the most commonly used architectural/design tools, autocad and
revit.
 Skip the extra step of drawing the footprints of the building from scratch.
z
ENERGY PLUS
 Automated parametric runs:
The tool is capable of generating automatic parametric runs for each
measure type.
 Capability of Transition into detailed Model:
From schematic design mode to detailed mode towards the end of the
design process.
 Net Zero energy building design:
Capability to estimate demand per load type and produce very reliable and
accurate energy consumption estimate.
 Can model high performance technologies without workarounds:
 Technologies like chilled beams,radiant heating/cooling etc..that are
becoming more and more common in high performance designs cannot
be modeled by all simulation engines.
 When this is the ease, either the technology cannot be considered,or the
user must have significant expertise to create workarounds to appropriate
the technology.

ENERGY PLUS

Below is list of some of the features of the first release of EnergyPlus.

 Transient heat conduction through building elements such as walls, roofs, floors,
etc. using conduction transfer functions
 Thermal comfort models based on activity, inside dry bulb, humidity, etc..
 Anisotropic sky model for improved calculation of diffuse solar on tilted surfaces.
 Advanced fenestration calculations including controllable window blinds,
electrochromic glazings, layer-by-layer heat balances that allow proper assignment
of solar energy absorbed by window panes, and a performance library for
numerous commercially available windows.
 Daylighting controls including interior illuminance calculations, glare simulation
and control, luminaire controls, and the effect of reduced artificial lighting on
heating and cooling.
 Atmospheric pollution calculations that predict CO , SO , NO, CO, particulate
matter, and hydrocarbon production for both on site and remote energy conversion.
The first version of the program contained mainly features directly linked to the
thermal aspects of buildings, later versions of the program also included other
issues that are important to the built environment: water, electrical systems,
etc.
