Core Components:
As a minimum, the core must incorporate the following entities:

• Fire stairs.
• Vertical transportation elements, which will be an arrangement of elevators and
possibly escalators, including both passenger elevators and one or more service or
freight elevators.
• Toilet rooms for both the male and female population and with provision to
meet requirements for both.
• Electric closets / duct.
• Communication closets / shaft for multiple telecommunication providers.
• Local fan rooms (if floor-by-floor air-conditioning equipment is the selected
approach for the project) or large supply air and return air shafts (if central fan
rooms are the selected approach for the project).
• Shaft space for other HVAC risers, beyond those for the local fan rooms or the
supply and return ducts for the central fan rooms, such as toilet exhaust, general
exhaust, or dedicated smoke exhaust risers and possibly kitchen exhaust risers.
• Space for risers for the piping of the HVAC system and plumbing system as well
as riser space for electrical distribution cable and distribution cable for the
building management and fire alarm systems.

STACK EFFECT
AERODYNAMIC
Stack effect is always a potential problem
for vertical spaces such as service shafts,
elevator shafts, and staircases.
DESIGN CHALLENGES
associated with Stack effect :

 Uncomfortable and / or excessive

air movement.
DESIGN CHALLENGES
associated with Stack effect :

 Inefficient heating & cooling

strategy.
DESIGN CHALLENGES
associated with Stack effect :

 Flow borne noise.

DESIGN CHALLENGES
associated with Stack effect :

 Elevator door operations

 Swing door operations
 Propagation and spreading of
smoke.
