BMLS 2A
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Plati Helmenthis
Class: Cestoda
Order: Cyclophyllidea

Genus: Taenia
Species: solium

Taxonomy
 Known as the "pork tapeworm"
 Tapeworm infections have been recorded in history
from 1500 B.C.
 Have been recognized as one of the earliest human
parasites.
 Taenia solium infection has been recognized since
biblical times
 Parasite life cycle has been identified by the 1850s.
 T. solium and T. saginata are very similar, the
extraintestinal T. solium infection is far more
dangerous and serious.

Diagnosis
TAENASIS
Praziquantel (5-10mg/kg, single dose for adults and children)
Niclosamide (not available locally)
Criteria for cure:
a) Recovery of the scolex
b) A negative stool examination 3 months after treatment.

CYSTICEROSIS
Praziquantel (50-70mg/kg divided into three dose for 30 days)
Albendazole (400mg twice daily for 8-30 days)

Treatment
Epidemiology
•the distribution of T. solium infection
is highly related to the habit of eating
raw or improperly cooked pork
•common in Slavic countries, Latin
America, Southeast Asia, China and
India.
Thorough cooking of
meat is a primary
measure.
Freezing at 20°C for 10
days kills the cysticerci
Sanitary inspection of
all slaughtered pigs
should be done.
Meat inspection should
be include examination
of the liver as well.
