What is a P&ID?

 A Piping and Instrument Diagram (P&ID) is a detailed,

graphical representation of a process showing:
· All equipment including spares
· All piping and valving
· All instrumentation
 P&IDs provide the detail necessary to design, construct and
operate a process facility
 P&IDs are normally shown as side elevation
 P&IDs are also called:
· Engineering Flow Diagrams (EFDs)
· Mechanical Flow Diagrams (MFDs)
· Engineering Line Diagrams (ELDs)
· Process Engineering Flow Schemes (PEFS)

4
What is a P&ID used for?

· Uses for a P&ID include:

− Numbering and tagging
− Depiction of controls, alarm & trip functions
− Communication from engineering to designers
− Summary of piping & equipment sizing information
− Generation of lists
− Basis for building piping models
− Design development
− Basis documents for HAZOP
− Key document for construction & commissioning
− Key safety document for operations
− Maintain control of the design
5
WP P&ID Development Guideline / Procedures

· Local Office Process Discipline Induction / EMS

· EPP-0017-COR-EN: Process Drawings Content Standard
· EPP-0016-COR-EN: P&ID Development Procedure
· EPF-0121-COR-EN: Drawing Prompt List Template
· EPP-0035-COR-EN: Engineering Checking and Stamps
Standard
· Local Office Design Manual (e.g. ENM-0157-AUE)
· Project Execution Plan (PEP)

· Note, most projects use client standards which may differ

from industry and WP standards/guidelines.

6
P&ID Process Engineering Responsibility

 Process is solely responsible up to when they are

“frozen”, typically post-HAZOP “Issued for Design”
 During design, Process are the custodians of the
“Master” P&IDs
 Input also from Instrumentation, Mechanical, Civil,
Electrical, Piping
 Process Engineer sizes equipment and piping
 Drawing done electronically by 2D-CAD Group
· AUTOCAD
· Microstation
· Intelligent P&IDs (SPPID)
7
Early Considerations for P&ID Development

· PIP PIC-001: Process Industry Practices – P&ID Documentation

the rest
 The legend sheet is a summary document that sets out P&ID
nomenclature covering:
· Revision format
· Clouding (scope & revision)
· Equipment representation and numbering
· Instrument tagging

9
P&ID Development - Revisions

· B – Issued for Client Review
· C – Issued for HAZOP
· D – Issued for Design
· 0 – Issued for Construction
Project specifics may see variations to the detail above.

10
Clouding

Note: Revision clouds are Alpha up to Rev 0 (typically IFC)

11
Revision Clouding

♦ Flows through a specialty piping item or control valve
♦ Minor vent / drain points
− Show insulation code changes
− Show special layout requirements (e.g. “No Pockets”)
with a note
19
P&ID Requirements - Piping

· Specialty Piping Items (SP Items)

− An SP-XXXX number is given to items that are not part of a pipe
specification and have no instrument / equipment number (e.g.
pipe strainer, injection quill).
