AUXILIARY BOILER

WHAT IS A BOILER?

• A boiler is a closed vessel in which fluid (generally water) is

heated.
• The fluid does not necessarily boil.
• The heated or vaporized fluid exits the boiler for use in
various processes or heating applications, including water
heating, central heating, boiler-based power
generation, cooking, and sanitation.
WHAT IS AUXILIARY BOILER?

• Auxiliary boiler is a power production boiler, It produce power for initiate the process
of main production boiler.
• As the name suggests, an auxiliary boiler is small boiler in addition to the main boiler
in a power plant which is basically used to serve auxiliary purposes of the plant rather
than being used for putting the steam in the Turbine for power generation.
• Auxiliary Boiler is mainly requires during the startup of the plant as the steam
generated is used for many purposes like heating of fuel oil, steam blowing, initial
gland sealing of turbine glands and other systems which require steam for starting.
• After the main Boiler is light up, the aux. boiler is shut down as it is no longer needed.
TYPES OF AUXILIARY BOILERS

• Auxiliary boiler can be of two types like other boilers:

• Water tube boiler
• Fire tube boiler
• Auxiliary boiler is same as other simple boilers but it is
distinguished due to its uses i.e. auxiliary purposes.
MAIN USES OF AUXILIARY BOILER

• Auxiliary boilers are used in many places but as so for its major uses
are concerned it is used in ships where it produces steam which can
be further converted to electricity.
•  Power generation projects require an auxiliary boiler system to
provide steam on start-up, during maintenance shut-downs, for
steam turbine gland systems, etc.
• It is also used in the places where we are having boilers or having
high temperature/pressure flue gases from exhaust head.
MARINE BOILER
• It is a type of auxiliary boiler which is used in Navy ships.
• A steam generator on a ship is an auxiliary boiler which draws
high-pressure superheated steam from the vessel's propulsion
system to generate low pressure saturated steam.
• The auxiliary boiler acts as a receiver for the steam generated by the
economizer.
• This secondary steam is then used to power auxiliary shipboard
engines driving winches or pumps, or to meet any steam
requirement that does not require superheating, such as boiler
feedwater and freshwater evaporators.
• For most auxiliary boilers, shell and tube boilers are used.
• However, for exhaust gas economizer or exhaust gas boilers
vertical configurations are preferred, as it provides less back
pressure on the exhaust gas system.
• Exhaust gas boilers are used when ship is on voyage, and
when in port, the auxiliary boiler is used.
CONSTRUCTION OF AUXILIARY BOILER

• The vertical two drum water tube boiler used normally on

ships is top-fired and equipped with a steam atomising
burner.
• As the burner, the local control panel and all relevant boiler
mountings are mounted on top of the boiler, this can easily
be operated and monitored from the burner platform.
The principal drawing of a typical auxiliary boiler is
shown in figure below
•  The steam drum is cylindrical with two flat plates of equal thickness.
Because of the internal pressure, the flat plates are mutually
connected by vertical solid stays.
• The steam drum is furnished with the necessary internal fittings to
ensure an even distribution of the feed water, of the circulation water
from the exhaust boiler and to ensure a sufficient dryness of steam.
• The burner cone in the furnace opening are an integrated part and
accordingly no refractory are provided in the top of the furnace room.
• Manholes are conveniently placed in both drums and inside the
drums enough space is available for inspection and maintenance.
• The water drum is designed similar to the steam drum. The drum
size gives optimal space for the heating coil and easy access for
inspection.
• As standard the auxiliary boiler is prepared for tack
welding along the foundation of the boiler shell.
• Some boilers may, however, be provided with four support
feet instead, one as fixed foot and the others with the
possibility of thermal expansion.
• Both the furnace and the generating tube bank are
located asymmetrically and are separated by the screen
wall.
• Besides the screen wall the furnace consists of gas tight
polygon shaped membrane walls
• The generating tube bank consists of vertical pin-tubes
arranged in a staggered configuration. To avoid any risk of
vibration problems supports are arranged.
• The flue gas passes through the deflected tubes at the
bottom of the screen wall, up through the generating tube
bank and out through the smoke outlet box. An effective
• The bottom tube plate is first covered with coat of
insulation refractory and above with castable
refractory.
•  Access to the furnace is possible through the access
door at the bottom of the furnace. Inspection of the
generating tubes is also possible through the
inspection door at the bottom of the furnace.
• Inspection of the burner flame is possible through the
two inspection holes arranged in two heights on the
furnace panel wall.

AUXILIARY BOILER IN POWER PLANTS

• Auxiliary boiler is a power production boiler, It produce power for

initiate the process of main production boiler.
• The Main power production boiler taking too much of power
(Pumping the water, Initial firing, Milling / Pulverise the Coal &
ID,FD fan etc..) to initiate steam production.
• This required power mainly get form some other resource, But it
also impact the cost of power production, so Plant itself they
produce the power, what it required in initial stage of power
production.
• Some of the case hybrid power plants power will use the
initiate the main plant, at the time Hybrid power plant, it act
as the auxiliary power supply system.
• Auxiliary boiler is a miniature construction like as subcritical
power plant, it may produce 20-45 kW power.
• After Main power plant to produce the power then auxiliary
boiler will be shutdown.
