Introduction to series
circuit
Submitted By:- Prashant Patil
Components in series
Series Circuit :– A circuit in which the
components are connected end to end so
that current has only one path to follow
throughout the circuit.
Conditions to be satisfied for series
Connection
1) There should be end to end connection.

2) Current through the element should be same.

(a) Satisfied both the conditions (b) Second condition is not satisfied
Current in a series circuit
• When you put an ammeter into a series
circuit the current is the same wherever
you put the ammeter.
• IT=I1=I2=I3=…..
Resistance in series circuit
• When resistors are in series with each
other there total resistance is just there
individual resistance added together.
• RT = R1+R2+R3+……
Voltage in a series circuit
• There is a voltage drop for each
resistor, but the sum of these voltage
drops is the same as the voltage
rating of the power supply. This
concept can be expressed
mathematically by the following
equation.
• VT = V1+V2+V3+……
Important points about SERIES CIRCUITS

1) All the resistors in series circuit carry the

same current.

2) The total voltage V applied across the series

resistive circuit is the sum of voltage drops
across the individual resistors i.e.
VT = V1+V2+V3+……
Continue…

3) Equivalent resistance RT = R1+R2+R3+……+Rn

4) Equivalent resistance RT is higher than each

individual resistance i.e.
RT > R1, RT > R2,……, RT > Rn
Practical application of series
connection ( In AC Circuits )
• The chain of small lights used for the purpose of
decoration is an excellent example of series
connection.

•All those small bulbs are connected in series and

the series combination is connected across the AC
supply
Disadvantage of series connection :- Even if one bulb becomes faulty (open
circuited ) the series circuit stops functioning and all bulbs will be off.
