ABSTRACT

 There is a rapid increase in generation of waste

plastics all around the world due to Economic
Growth, Changing Consumption and Production
Patterns.
 Due to growing concern about the disposal off waste,
and the panic in the current environment, the object
of this was chosen as “Soil Stabilisation Using
Polypropylene as Waste Material” which is one of the
type of the plastic waste.
 Soil is modified with polypropylene by varying
percentages 5%, 5.5%, 6.0%, 6.5%, and 7.0%.
 To determine the various laboratory tests.
OBJECTIVE

 Geotechnical applications and to evaluate the

effects of waste polypropylene fibers on shear
strength of unsaturated soil by carrying out direct
shear tests and unconfined compression tests on
different soil samples.
 The results obtained are compared for the samples
and inferences are drawn towards the usability and
effectiveness of fiber ,a cost effective approach.
SCOPE

 Polypropylene is a versatile material with attractive

characteristics and advantages, as a result of this
polypropylene is now being used commonly all over
the world.
 Waste fibers have high strength, less cost, long life
and also they are non-biodegradable, therefore, may be
used for the enhancement of engineering properties of
soil (stabilization of soil) and may also be used for
control of seepage.
 The use of waste fibers will results in decreasing the
requirement of valuable land for the disposal of wastes
and it will also reduce the environmental impacts.
METHODS OF SOIL IMPROVEMENT

 It can be done either by modification or

stabilization or both.
 Soil modification is the addition of a
modifier (cement, lime, fly ash etc.) to a soil
to change its index properties.
 Stabilization is the treatment of soils to
enable their strength and durability to be
improved such that they become totally
suitable for construction beyond their original
classification
CONTD..
 Cement and lime are the two commonly used
materials for stabilizing soils.
 These materials are costly due to sharp increase
in the cost of energy and these soil improving
additives increase the cost of construction of
stabilized structure.
 One popular and inexpensive method of soil
stabilization is using waste materials.
