Vectors

Lesson 1
Lesson Objective
•  Able to differentiate Scalar and Vector quantity
• Able to state vector in the form of
• Able to draw vector on a grid given the values in the form of
• Able to evaluate vectors addition and subtraction
Introduction to Vectors
• Vectors are the study of quantity with magnitude and
directions

• Vectors are drawn as ARROWS with the size being

represented as the length of the line and the direction
shown from the arrow.
Vectors have direction and
magnitude
a = –c because they are parallel, same length but have opposite direction

a b c
b > a because b longer

SCALARS AND VECTORS
A scalar quantity has only magnitude.
A vector quantity has both magnitude and direction
DRAWING and READING
VECTORS
•  Vectors are written with two values in this form .
• Value a represents the horizontal-displacement
• Value b represents the vertical-displacement
• It is similar to measuring the length and breadth of a hypotenuse of a
right-angled triangle

Just like in graphs,
start point horizontal displacement is
a
s r positive if it goes to the
right and negative if it is to
–b the left.
  e
r= Vertical displacement is
positive when it goes up
and negative when it goes
down.
Steps to success
•COUNTING
  VECTORS
• Identify the start point. Count the horizontal displacement
• Next count vertical displacement.
• Put negative signs for displacement that either goes left or down.
• Write the vector values in the form of
where a=horizontal displacement
b = vertical displacement
Steps to success
DRAWING VECTORS
• Mark a dot for the start point and count horizontally.
• Next count vertically from where you stop the horizontal count.
• Remember to follow direction of the positive and negative sign.
• Mark the end point
• Join the lines and draw the arrow direction
SCALAR MULTIPLICATION

  a = , then 3a =

ADD AND SUBTRACT VECTORS

  a = and b =

a) 2a + b b) 3a – 4b
