FIRST
TRANSITIVE VERB
● An action verb is transitive if it directs action
toward someone or something named in the same
sentence.

● The outfielder caught the ball.


● We ate the cake.
INTRANSITIVE VERB
● An action verb is intransitive if it does not direct
action toward someone or something named in the
same sentence.

● Elizabeth slept in the cave.


● The little child shouted loudly.
VOICES OF VERBS
●Voice is the form of the verb that
shows whether the subject is
performing the action.
• Active
• Passive
*Voices of verbs help in the “economy of words” in a
sentence.
ACTIVE VOICE
●The subject / doer is
performing the action.

●The object receives the
action of the verb.
ACTIVE VOICE
●A verb is active if its subject performs the
action.

⮚The puppeteer manipulated the strings.
(manipulated is a transitive verb because it is
accompanied by a direct object)
⮚Dead leaves gathered
subject verb in the garden.
(gathered is an intransitive verb because it does not
contain a direct object)
Passive VOICE
●Be Verb + The Past Participle

●The subject / doer receives the action


of the verb

●The object becomes the subject.
PASSIVE VOICE
●A verb is passive if its action is performed upon the subject. (the subject
is the receiver of the action)

⮚The strings were manipulated by the puppeteer.
(this time the subject did not perform the action but receives the
action)

⮚The dead leaves were gathered in the garden.
(the dead leaves “receives” the act of being gathered in a pile)

Notice that a verb in the passive voice


would always present itself in a verb phrase.

PASSIVE VOICE: You are going

PAST PERFECT

left an envelope on the table.
