Locations Agriculture and Farms
Agriculture is one of the most dangerous industries
with proportionally the highest amounts of
accidents.
There are hazards in most areas of the farm
from machinery and animals to hazardous
chemicals and even plants. It is critical that the
farm visit is risk assessed and the controls followed.
Assistance can be found by using the Farms
checklist, or by Safety Advice Line or your Safety
Advisor.
Farm machinery ranges from combin
e harvesters to strummers via quad bikes and tra
ctors. The key issues to remember, are the peopl
e using the machinery competent to do so: and i
s the machinery being using in a way which it w
as designed for, for example if a tractor has onl
y one seat then it is not designed to take passen
gers. Always take advice from competent peopl
e before engaging with this machinery.

Farmers are generally not used to having people around them when
they are maneuvering machinery, and non farming people (us) are not
usually used to being around large pieces of moving machinery. What adds
to the risk of an accident is the restricted space these large pieces of
machinery have in which to move.
Animals on forms. dogs, rats etc. can cause injury or ill
health. Dogs, bite, cows and bull charge, cats scratch, pigs
crush and birthing sheep can spread infection
(zoonotic Chlamydia, dangerous to expectant mothers). There
are many other issues which need to be considered and should
be discussed with your Safety Advisor.
Chemicals on forms can cause all manner of irritation
and illness. These may be chemicals in current use abandoned,
stored. or out of date. The farm chemicals can be in liquid,
powder, solid or gas and may have left residues in containers
or storage around the farm. Advice should be taken when even
touching anything on a farm which may cause harm.
Chemicals should not be handled.
Plants on farms may have an effect
on health, whether it be from the excessive amounts of pollen, types of
sap or the fact that they have been treated with chemicals.
Farm Building are not always necessarily in the best of
condition, some can be quite dilapidated. Uneven floors collapsing roofs,
asbestos containing material can all be structural hazards while some
building are hazardous by the nature of the process such as grain silos and
automated milking parlours. If you intend to move around the farm
ensure that you are accompanied by someone who knows what they are
doing and the hazards are pointed out to you. If you feel uncomfortable or
feel that your safety is being compromised, retreat to a safe refuge.
Question
• Why is agriculture one of the most dangerous indus
tries?
• Can a tractor have passengers ?
• Give one example of dangers in Farm Building ?
