History
Nepal’s rail track chronology

• 1927 : Raxaul Amlekhgunj Railway construction started and continued in operation till 1970
• 1937: Feb 16 Jaynagar-Janakpur –Bijalpura 51km stretch came into operation but after Bighi-Bridge got
washed away by a flood in 2000, the service remained limited to Janakpur(29km)
• 2006 : Nepal signed Trans Asian Railways
agreement
• 2008 :West Electrified Railway Project
office established.
• 2009: Feasibility study of East-West(945km),
Ktm –Pokhara(187km),
• 2010: MOU between Nepal and dIndia government
signed for cross border railway connectivity
at five different locations.
• 2011: Department of Railways established.
• 2012 : Feasibility study of Kathmandu valley metro rail completed
• 2013 : Detailed Project Report of Simara-Bardibas and Birgunj link completed (136km)
• 2014 : Construction in the Bardibas-Lalbandi section begins

• 2017: Nepal signed membership of One Belt One Road initiative led by China
Future Prospects and Expansion
1. Janakpur Jayanagar Railway
• 53km Railway line
• Currently being upgraded from
2’6” to 5’6”
• Project implemented
by indian grant of abt Rs.10 billion

3. Metro in Kathmandu
• In 2012, inception report on feasibility submitted prepared by Korean
and Nepal firms
• Proposed 5 Metro lines in valley
• Proposed cost for 77km- 330billion

4. Lhasa to Kathmandu Train
• Starting points/ terminal : lhasa-Kathmandu
• Designed operating speed : 120-160 km/hr
• Straight line distance : 540km –only for Shigatse Gyirong section
• Progress : currently in preparation stage
• Status : 1st International Railway links China and Nepal
