Physical Education and

Sport Defined
• Historically, physical education programs
focused on teaching children and youths in the
school setting.
Physical Education
• An educational process that use physical activity
as a means to help individuals acquire skills,
fitness, knowledge, and attitudes that contribute
to their optimal development and well- being.
Play
• Refers to activities
engaged in freely for
amusement.
• Play is spontaneous, and
the act of playing is
rewarding in itself.
• Play emphasizes the joy
of participation.
Games
• Are contests in which the
outcome is determined by
strategy, skill, or chance
Sports
• Are organized, competitive physical
activities governed by rules.

Athletics
• Highly organized, competitive
sports engaged in by skillful
participants
Legality of Physical Education
Republic Act no. 5708 

- an act providing for the promotion


and financing of an integrated
Physical Education and Sports
Development Program for the schools
in the Philippines.
Section 1.   

This Act shall be known as "The


Schools Physical Education and Sports
Development Act of 1969."   
Sec. 2.    An integrated physical education and sports development program in all
schools in the Philippines shall be undertaken by the Department of Education in
accordance with the following guiding principles: 

    The goal of physical education is to instill in young citizens a proper appreciation
of the importance of physical development hand in hand with the mental
development in individual and social activities;

1. Health
Health education concerns itself with the total well-
being of the individual, encompassing physical,
mental, social, emotional, and spiritual health.
Three areas within health education are:

1. Health instruction
- Teaching the basics of healthful living.
2. Delivery of health services
- Concerned with developing and maintaining a
satisfactory level of health for all people.
3. Environment health
-the primary concern is the development of healthful
and safe environments.

2. Recreation
is generally thought of as self- chosen activities that
provide a means of revitalizing and refreshing one’s body
and spirit.

3. Dance
dance is a popular activity and a performing art that
gives participants an opportunity for aesthetic expression
through movement.

Objectives of Physical Education
Physical Development
• Foremost objective and related with physical
development.
• Development of organ systems such as circulatory
system, nervous system, muscular system, digestive
system.
• Development in size, shape, and efficiency of organic
systems due to effects of physical activities which are
performed.
Mental Development
• Related to mental development of an individual.
• Various physical activities need alertness of mind and
deep concentration.
• Through participation in various activities individual
learns to draw certain conclusions.
• Able to understand and faced situations in game.
Social Development
• Related to development of social traits, essential for
better adjustment in life.
• Players come closer to each other in spite of different
culture and place.
• Better source of attaining qualities like cooperation,
sympathy, sportsmanship.
Emotional Development
• Emotions are vital for every individual but excess are
always bad.
• One of the major objective responsible for developing/
controlling various emotions like fear and anger.
• By participating in various physical education programs
an individual starts having control over his/ her
emotions.
