• Three types of balance: left has equal
• Symmetrical – both sides carry the distribution from
same visual weight the center point.
• Asymmetrical – visual weight is not • Distribution is
the same, but still appear balanced through color,
• Radial – equally distributed from a space, and the
center point objects

Example 1 Example 2 Example 3

BALANCE – EXAMPLE 1

• This piece of art shows an

asymmetrical balance – the
weight of the objects in the
picture are not the same
• The weight of the elephant
(large) is weighing down on
the beach ball (small).
• This is due to size

Balance Main

BALANCE - EXAMPLE 2

• This photo depicts symmetrical

balance – both sides carry the same
visual weight
• Although the colors are flipped on
the sides, the weight is still
balanced.
• Symmetrical balance gives a sense
of stability in a visual sense

BALANCE – EXAMPLE 3

• The balance of the rocks

are center-aligned, but
the force is applied in a
downward pressure that
is proportional with a
linear alignment

• An area of the design • The emphasis in the
that catches a viewer’s picture to the left is on
eye the green tomato.
• One area typically • This is because the

the numerous red
tomatoes.

Example 1 Example 2
Example 3
EMPHASIS – EXAMPLE 1

• Even though there is only repetition of

circles within this piece of art, there is
emphasis on one particular circle.
• The emphasis is on the smaller white
circle because of the size of it
compared to all of the other larger
circles

EMPHASIS – EXAMPLE 2

• The flower is where the

emphasis is in this photo.
• Emphasis is created because
the flower is bright and in
focus, while the background is
dark and blurred.

EMPHASIS – EXAMPLE 3

• In this piece of art,

emphasis is created by
color, size, and shape.
• The size and shape of the
red square is what is
emphasized in this piece
due to being surrounded by
smaller-sized, black circles

PROPORTION – EXAMPLE 1

• The proportion in this piece of

art specifically focuses at the
size of the human over the
city.
• The human is a lot larger
than the city.
• The proportion indicates
depth of perspective.

Proportion Main

PROPORTION – EXAMPLE 2

• The proportion in this

picture is done well
because of the
relationship of the
objects in the piece.
• The quantity, size, and
number of objects in this
piece are the perfect
ratio.

Proportion Main

PROPORTION – EXAMPLE 3

• The different proportions in this

picture help create emphasis.
• The fish is much larger in size
compared to the human in the boat
trying to catch him.
• The fish being larger is attention
getting

REPETITION – EXAMPLE 1

• The images of Mickey Mouse are

repeated over this piece of
artwork four times
• The repetition also creates a
sense of unity in this image

REPETITION – EXAMPLE 2

• The repetition in this image is a

planned pattern that also has
rhythm.
• You can see the similar elements of
lines and shapes throughout with
the help of shading.

REPETITION – EXAMPLE 3

strictly a pattern of the same pencil

design.

• Unity creates a sense of grouped together
completion and the proximity
of them creates a
sense of unity
• The similar colors
in the flamingos
also creates unity

UNITY – EXAMPLE 1

• In this piece of art, the artist uses

the repetition of the trees to create
unity
• The background of the artwork has a
number of colors, but it creates unity
because it is done the same way
throughout.

Unity Main

UNITY – EXAMPLE 2

• Multiple areas of this artwork create

unity
• The contrast of the background and
the arms create unity
• There is unity in the alignment and
proximity of the arms all being
equal to form a square

Unity Main
Menu Menu
UNITY – EXAMPLE 3

• There is unity through this piece of

work due to the shapes used and
the direction in which they are all
pointed
• The artist uses the repetition and a
select few colors to also create
unity
