element such as an object or
symbol all over the work of art
• Used to organize surfaces in a
constant regular manner

movement. The repetition
of swans, wheels and
flowers create a balance
and eye-catching design.

• Use to make a certain part or
point in the design stand out.
• Use to draw viewer’s attention
by creating a point of interest
or focal point.

destroying the unity of the
whole design.

Balance

• Provides stability and structure to


a design by distributing equal
visual weight on the two side of
the vertical axis.

• This example shows a
symmetrical balance on
either side of the vertical
axis. There is an equal
number of people of the
two side creating a
balance in the poster.

• This example also shows a
symmetrical balance on
the two side of the
woman’s hair. The woman
in this design is the middle
where the different icons
on the hair on both side is
balance so that one side
will not be heavier or more
than the other to destroy
the harmony of the design.

• This is an example of
asymmetrical balance that uses
different but equally weighted
features on the two side. In this
design, the man is on one side
while the other icons/boxes is on
the other side creating a
balance design.

Variety
• Using different elements in an image to
create visual interest.

• This design uses a variety
of lines and shapes to
create. The only element
that is constant
throughout this whole
design is the use colors,
black, grey and white.

a sense of diversity yet
harmony about this
place/design.

• A sense of unity that everything in the
artwork work together.
• Visually pleasing agreement between
the difference elements in the design.

There is also a pattern in the colors
that were used to create a sense
of unity.

create a sense of harmony.
