what is design?
• Today, you will be able to explain the truism
that design principles still apply for any new
design (contrast of colors, shapes, and lines
produces harmony) whether done by hand
or machine (computer).
What is the Principles of Design?

• The principles of design describe the ways

that artists use the elements of art in a
work of art.
What are the Principles of Design?
• Balance is the distribution of the visual weight of
objects, colors, texture, and space.
Usually, the artist will
make one area stand out
by contrasting it with
other areas. The area
Emphasis is the part of could be different in
the design that catches the size, color, texture,
viewer’s attention. shape, etc.
Such movement can be
directed along lines,
edges, shape, and color
within the work of art.

Movement is the path the viewer’s eye takes

through the work of art, often to focal areas.
Pattern is the
repeating of an object
or symbol all over the
work of art.
Repetition works with pattern to make
the work of art seem active. The
repetition of elements of design creates
unity within the work of art.
Proportion is the feeling
of unity created when all
parts (sizes, amounts, or
number) relate well with
each other.
Rhythm is created when
one or more elements of
design are used repeatedly
to create a feeling of
organized movement.
Rhythm creates a mood like
music or dancing. To keep
rhythm exciting and active,
variety is essential.
Variety is the use of
several elements of
design to hold the
viewer’s attention and
to guide the viewer’s
eye through and around
the work of art.
Unity is the feeling of
harmony between all
parts of the work of art,
which creates a sense of
completeness.
1. What are the
contrasting
colors in the
color wheel?

2. How about the

color harmony in
the color wheel?
• Color makes our surroundings beautiful. It
catches our eyes, so we become aware of
particular objects. Colors may come in a
variety of shades and hues.
• The three basic colors are red, yellow and
blue. They are called primary colors.
• From these basic colors, we produce the
secondary colors which are orange, green
and violet.
• By combining the primary colors and the
secondary colors in equal amounts will give
us the intermediate colors namely the
yellow-orange, blue-green, blue-violet,
red-violet, and red-orange.
• To create artistic print works, applying the
principle of art which is contrast help a lot. This
is because contrast can direct the eyes of a
viewer to a particular interesting point.
• Contrasts can be done by considering the
arrangement of opposite elements like small
or large shapes, rough or smooth, light or
dark colors.
• The colors white and black show the
classical contrast.
• Complementary colors can also provide
contrast.
• A line is a movement of a point to another
point across a plane or a space.
• It becomes visible because it contrasts in
value with the surface on which it is drawn.
• One can make use of lines in the images to
be printed.
• Artistic ways of using lines can make the
images or prints attractive and interesting.
In today’s activity we will learn to apply the
principles of design either hand-drawn or
digitally-made design. Always keep in mind the
rubric on designing to be guided.
Directions: Create a digitally-made or hand
drawn design of your dream house using the
different principles of design. Draw it in your
activity notebook or use any gadgets you have.
Analyze and answer the following
questions. Prepare to present your work.
a. How do you able to make a design?
b. What principles of design are applied?
c. What medium is used to compose it?
d. What is the artwork all about? Tell it in one
sentence.
Value Integration:

and gave remarks of your created design, how
will you accept suggestions and remarks of
others?
