2nd Quarter; School Year 2020-2021

TITLE OF THE LESSON: Basic Elements & Principles of Graphics & Layout (Part2)

I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the lesson, learners are able to:

1. Evaluate existing websites and online resources based on the principles of layout,
graphic, and visual message design

II. PRESENTATION OF THE LESSON:

In our previous lesson, we talked about the basic elements of graphics and layout. For this LAS we will
learn about the basic principles of graphics and layout. With the rise in popularity of social media and the
graphics design for the web and applications, there is a high demand for graphic designers. Graphic design
is a sought-after skill that can help produce high-end designs, adding graphics to your design can help
you showcase your creative skills.

Basic Principles of graphics and layout:

1. Balance:
• It is the distribution of the visual weight of objects, colors, texture, and space.
• Balance is a psychological sense of equilibrium.
• Balance places the parts of a visual in an aesthetically pleasing arrangement.
• In the context of graphic design, balance is of three types.
➢Symmetrical – This type of design is formed along a vertical axis and or horizontal
axis, where the weight of the elements is evenly divided into both sides of the
layout.
➢Asymmetrical – This type of balance employs scale, contrast and colour to even
out the flow of a layout. It is usually found in websites, where two sides of a

) elements.
➢Radial– Here, the elements of a design are placed in a circular pattern on the
layout. This provides a sense of movement and dynamism to the eyes of the
viewer.

3. Movement:
• Movement is controlling the elements in a composition so that the eye is led to move from
one to the next and the information is properly communicated to your viewers. It is used to
guide the viewer through the piece. Lines, shapes, color, depth and hierarchy can all be used
to guide the viewer from one point to the next at a glance. Sometimes referred to as leading
lines.
• Such movement can be directed along lines, edges, shape, and color within the work of art.

Leading lines

4. Variety:
• It provides contrast to harmony and unity. Variety consists of the differences in objects that
add interest to a visual image. It also uses several design elements to draw a viewer’s
attention.
• Variety can be achieved by using opposites or strong contrasts. Changing the size, point of
view, and angle of a single object can add variety and interest to a visual image.

5. Pattern, Repetition & Rhythm:

• These are the repeating visual element on an image or layout to create unity in the layout or
image.
• Pattern: is the repeating of an object or symbol all over the work of art.
• Repetition: works with pattern to make the work of art seem active. The repetition of elements
of design creates unity within the work of art.
• Rhythm: is created when one or more elements of design are used repeatedly to create a
feeling of organized movement.

6. Proportion:
• The relationship of two or more elements in a design and how they compare with one another.
Proportion is said to be harmonious when a correct relationship exists between the elements
with respect to size, color, or quantity.

7. Emphasis:
• The part of the design that catches the viewer’s attention. Usually the artist will make one
area stand out by contrasting it with other areas. The area could be different in size, color,
texture, shape, etc.
• A principle of design which refers to giving special importance to one or certain part of the
design. The goal is to grab the attention of the audience in one go. Emphasis in an image
can be achieved through contrast, placement, size, color, repetition, focal point /
dominance etc.

III. LEARNING TASKS:

A. Cut-out or take pictures that shows at least three (3) principles of graphics and layout. (15 pts.)

B. Re-draw in a bond paper and apply Emphasis. (10 pts.)
