WHY AUGMENTATION?
 Stand alone GPS system is not sufficient
for high precision applications in terms
of in terms of Required Navigation
Performance(RNP) parameters.
 ACCURACY
 INTEGRITY
 AVAILABILITY
 CONTINUITY
 CLASSIFICATION OF AUGMENTATION
SYSTEMS

 GBAS

 SBAS

 ABAS
SBAS(Space based
Augmentation system)
 First SBAS system was initiated by
USA in early nineties.
 SBAS refers to a safety critical
system having GEO satellite-based
augmentation of GPS-SPS over
certain region supported by the
necessary ground segment(hardware
& software).
SBAS Segments
 Ground segment
 Reference Stations
 Master Station(s)
 Uplink Station(s)
 Communication Network
 Space Segment.
 Navigation Satellites
 Correction Satellite(s)
 User Segment
 Receivers
Various SBAS systems
 WAAS(USA)

 EGNOS(Europe)

 MSAS(Japan)

 GAGAN(India)
GAGAN

GPS Aided GEO Augmented

Navigation (GAGAN) : The Indian
SBAS.
GAGAN Architecture
 Indian Reference Station (INRES).
 Indian Master Control Center (INMCC).
 Indian Land Uplink Station (INLUS).
 Core GNSS Constellation(GPS).

 GEO Satellite(Inmarsat 4F1 for TDS &

GSAT-4 for FOP).
 Communication Links/Network.
 User GAGAN receiver.
GAGAN Architecture
INRES
 It collects measurement data and
navigation messages from all GPS
and GEO satellites in view and
forward to INMCC
 Eight INRES stations are established
at Delhi, Bangalore, Ahmadabad,
Kolkata, Jammu, Port Blair, Guwahati
and Trivandrum
INMCC
 Indian Master Control Centre
(INMCC) is established at
Bangalore.

 Data is sent to this INMCC for

correction and integrity processing.
INLUS
 The Indian Land-Uplink station
communicates with the GEO-navigation
payload.
 Correction and integrity messages include
User Differential Ranging Error(UDRE) &
the Grid Ionospheric Vertical Error(GIVE)
along with Geo navigation message are
generated at IMCC, formats them and
uplinked to GEO satellite in C band
GEO Satellite
 It using a bent-pipe transponder,
which does a frequency conversion
from C band to L band, transmits
this data on the GPS Link L1
frequency; with a modulation similar
to that used by GPS; to users in the
intended service area, which is the
Indian Flight Information region
(FIR).
User Applications
 Civil Aviation Application :
 Improve air-safety, as the accuracy levels
of GAGAN are very high and uniform over
all phases of flight. Also ATC workload is
reduced as pilots have more situational
awareness.
 Increase flight density in smaller airports as
more aircrafts can be packed with lesser
separations because of high integrity levels
of GAGAN.
 Offer all-weather and seamless capability for
navigation in the Indian FIR
 Enable flights in Indian FIR towards the ‘Free
Flight ‘regime.

 Other Applications:
 GAGAN in ocean, coastal, inland-water and harbor
navigation.
 Land mobile application includes: vehicle
positioning, fleet management, emergency
services, theft protection and so on.
Conclusion
 GAGAN is designed to provide the
additional accuracy, availability & integrity
necessary to enable users to rely on GPS
for all phases of flight.
 GAGAN will provide benefits beyond
aviation to all modes of transportation,
including maritime, highways & railroads.
 GAGAN FOP will be completed by 2010
enabling operations by 2011
