Description of the programme

April, 2010.

 Provides education, training and employment


opportunities to school leavers

 facilitates single mothers and young men


between the ages of 17-20.
Problem statement

Research conducted by the Ministry of


Education and the private sector in the
Cayman Islands reveals that young adults in
the 17 to 21 age group do not possess the
skills which are needed for employment.
Goal
To prepare young Caymanians for the job
market by helping them to transition from
high school to full-time employment through
enhanced literacy, effective communication
and on-the-job training.
Assumptions
 Basic literacy skills will be developed
 
 Participants can develop skills of preparing professional resumes,
proper deportment for interviews and workplace etiquette
 
 There will be better social interaction among participants, thus
enhancing their ability to work in teams
 
 These participants can have a clearer perspective on the type of job that
suits them and further maintain employment

 Participants are motivated to continue their education and to define


their career interests

 The tasks will provide personal and professional hands-on training


Inputs
 Trained facilitators of the programme.
 
 Suitable guest speakers to address areas of motivation, work
ethics and deportment.
 
 Qualified Counsellors
 
 Employers committed to providing on-the-job training
opportunities

 Incentive (Weekly stipend)


 
 Passports for tracking progress
Activities
 Classes are geared towards the provision of basic skills, using face-to-face
methods of delivery

 Workshops on topics such as writing resumes, appropriate professional attire,


interview skills, and pride in performance
 
 Team building activities
 
 Acquisition of “passports” with stamps indicating levels of success in completing
programme activities
 
 Possibility of earning weekly stipend based on established criteria
 
 Job placement - participants are attached to local businesses and organizations
where they gain on-the-job experience
 
 Extra-curricular activities, such as involvement in community-based activities
Outputs
 Execute P2S programmes three times a year

 Facilitate three cohorts of young people ages 17 - 20 years for twelve


weeks on a full time basis, five days a week
 
 Conduct a special programme for one cohort of single mothers for 16
weeks on a full time basis, five days a week

 Provide one week of community service and work placement days for
all cohorts
 
 A weekly stipend with potential performance related bonus
 
 P2S’s curriculum includes a wide range of topics which support the
programme’s overall mission
Outcomes
 Participants now have required professional skills

 Participants are more capable of impressing potential employers


 
 Participants have a clearer idea of what kind of job suited to
them
 
 Single mothers are given the chance to provide for their children
 
 Participants’ morale and leadership skills are improved
 
 Participants are more independent and are better able to make
decisions
Impacts
 Young persons are better able to seek and maintain
employment. (Decrease in unemployment)

 Dependence on Government resources is diminished


 
 Potential increase in worker productivity
 
 Participants are able to contribute to the society
through community-based service
 
 Improvement in family relations
