Introduction
 A test is a device or technique
used to measure the performance,
skill level , or knowledge of a
learner on a specific subject
matter.
 test can be
STANDARDIZED TESTS AND NON
STANDARDIZED TESTS.
STANDARDIZED TESTS:

 Standardized test are those test stated

the uniformity and equality in the scoring
and administrating and interpreting the
result
e.g. Any examination in which the same
test is given in the same manner to all
students.
 A standardized test is a test that is
administered and scored in a consistent,
or "standard", manner.
 A standardized test is any form of test
that
(1) requires all test takers to answer the
same questions, or a selection of
questions from common bank of
questions, in the same way, and that
(2) is scored in a “standard” or consistent
manner, which makes it possible to
compare the relative performance of
individual students or groups of students.
Characteristics
 standardized tests and scales that have met the
criteria of testing.
This means that they have been used in a
sufficiently larger number of cases to make it
possible to determine their validity, reliability ,
objectivity and administratability.
 The tests usually use multiple – choice format tests.
 According to psychometrics, such test covers only
a narrow band of specialized intelligence.
Examples of standardized tests: TOEFL (Test Of
English As Foreign Language)
TYPES OF
STANDARDIZED TEST

Psychological test
A psychological test is an instrument
designed to describe and measure a
sample of certain aspect of human

Psychological tests yield objective and

standardized descriptions of the

Verbal reasoning Measures
Numerical reasoning
USES OF APTITUDE TEST

 Determining student performances

 To determine an individual’s knowledge.
 Selection of employee who is best suited
for a job.
 Carrier test: Aptitude based tests are
regarded as one of the most useful
varieties of career tests e.g. CET.
 Guidance: These can be used for guiding
candidate for suitable course or training.
Personality tests

to give it objectivity,
which device an instrument that as
far as possible will be free from
subjective judgment
Objectivity of an instrument achieved by
 There will be uniform and specified set of
instructions to be followed by every body
who administer the test,
 Norms of the test are based on scientific
sampling scientifically devised.
 Content of the test under construction is
subjected to analysis by means of
established techniques of test
standardization
 Objectivity is maintained in administering
and scoring the test
 Every test is designed for use with a
specified population or group
NON STANDARDIZED TEST
/TEACHER MADE TESTS:
 A non-standardized test is one that allows
for an assessment of an individual's abilities
or performances, but doesn't allow for a fair
comparison of one student to another.
 This type of test contrasts standardized
tests, such as state educational
development tests and college entrance
exams.
 They are made by the teacher himself to
measure the achievement of his pupil from
time to time
Characteristics of
teacher Made Test
 Basically teacher made tests are used to evaluate
the progress of the students in school. However ,
the specific use of tests may vary from school to
school and teacher or teacher.
 The test results can be used for students,
teachers, and for other administrative purposes.
 These tests are very simple to use.
 Easy for the students.
 Teachers can assess the strengths and
weaknesses of students.
 Tests are conducted continuously and children get
immediate feedback.
 Teachers can understand the need for re-
teaching concepts and can decide remedial
instruction.
 Teacher made tests devised by the
teachers are to meet their various needs
and directives.
 Tests are not so carefully and scientifically
prepared
 The items of teacher made tests are
seldom analyzed and edited.
 The types of behavioral changes covered
are often limited in scope.
 Limited area of applications; prepared by
almost all the teachers according to their
requirements.
 Teacher is directly involved in test
construction where he can measure directly
classroom m objectives and particular class
situation.
 This is valuable to the teacher.
 It caters to classroom or local situation.
 It can be carelessly planned and executed .
 Reliability is unknown.
 Done by the teacher himself.
USES OF NON STANDARDIZED TEST

 To know the ability and achievements

of students
 Helps the teacher to assess the
strength and weakness of student
 Provides continuous evaluation and
feedback to the teacher
 Motivates
1. the students , Helps to achieve
particular objectives
2. Helps the teacher to adopt better
instructional methods.
LIMITATIONS

 They are either too short or too

lengthy.
 Tests do not cover the entire contact.
 Tests are usually hurriedly conducted.
 Supervision is not proper.
Standardized Vs
Teacher Made Test
Standardized Tests
1. It is less valid than teacher made test.
2. These are not simple in construction, where the
content, scoring and interpretation all get fixed or
standardized for a particular age group, students
of the same grade, at different times and at
different places.
3. This is valuable to the teacher.
4. Universal applicability is there and are prepared
by experts and cater to all people’s requirements.
5. It is useful to variety of situation of systems.
6. It is less relevant for a particular situation.
  It can be carelessly planned and
executed as T.M test.
 Reliability is ensured .
 All the questions in it are expertly
written, properly pre-tested, rigorously
analyzed and scientifically refined.
 Non standardized test
1. they are used to evaluate the outcomes
and content of the of a specific curriculum
2. Quality is lower than that of the
standardized tests.
3. Reliability is unknown
4. Uniform procedure of administration and
scoring is possible but it is usually flexible
5. Scores can be compared and interpreted
only in the context of the local situation.
