INTRODUCTION
• Animal biotechnology has been practiced in one form or
another since the beginning of the domestication of animals.

• Many of the previously used tools of animal breeding,

genetics, and nutrition have played and will continue to play
an important role in the selection, propagation, and
management of desirable and economically important
characteristics in livestock.

• The production of ‘transgenic animals' is one such

biotechnology tool.

• A transgenic animal is one that has integrated a gene or

DNA sequence (a 'transgene'), which has been transferred
by human intervention, into the genome of a cell.
• Therefore, the objective of this seminar paper is:
• To discuss about transgenesis.
• To give a highlight on the role of transgenesis in the genetic
improvement of farm animals.
•
•
• 1901, German scientist Hans S. split a 2-cell new embryo
into two parts, successfully producing two larvae.

• 1953, Watson and Crick discover the double helix structure

of DNA.

• 1970,  The first chimeric mice were produced.

• 1996, Dolly is born at the Roslin Institute, And

• 1997, Dolly is revealed to the world.

• 2000, Pigs and goats reported cloned from adult cells.

• Cont…

• DNA microinjection was the first technique to prove

successful in mammals.

• Then retrovirus-mediated transgenesis and embryonic

stem (ES) cell-mediated gene transfer develop
subsequently.
