Structural Steel Overview
• A structural member is a 3D structural object, such as a beam or
column.

• You can create a structural member by specifying its start point and
end point, or by aligning the member with a line that you select in
your drawing.

• You can edit an individual structural member to change its settings.

• You can cut a structural member with respect to the boundaries of

another structural member.

Open Chapter 3
Open Drawing 1
Explain Ribbon Tab: Parts, Modify and Cutting
Member Settings: Standards, Shape types & size, Orientation

Cage Settings

5
Structural Grid
Open Drawing 2, Activate Grid and specify the values
Create layer for grid and apply layer to the grid

6
Placing Structural Beams
• Choose the type of beam you want to place.
• How the orientation should be.
• Place it in the model

Open Drawing 3, create layer for steel (activate the layer)

Member Settings: AISC, W-beam, W8x40, ASTM, A242
Set Line Model (End point snap on and Nearest snap off)
Select the Member and create it 7
Placing Structural Beams
Explain all member models
Add cross bracings: Shape AISC L, L2x2x1/4, Orientation default
Copy that cross bracings, create a beam at mid point

8
Editing Structural Beams
• Structure Edit option from Ribbon menu or context menu.

Open Drawing 4, Set top view, Rotate the beams by 90 degree

Select all and Rotate, Use Miter Joints at top frame corners
Use Cut Back Member: Limiting Member, Cut Member at all areas
Change the cross bracings size: L3x3x5/16
Edit the Grid Value to show dynamically not link with steel

9
Edited Model

10
Adding Ladder
Open Drawing 5, Change to line Model, Draw a mid point line
vertical and add a 12” line horizontal
Ladders have 3 points action: Start, End and Projection
Ladder Settings: Width, Projection, Rung, Ladder and Rung Shapes
set default standards
Cage Settings: Parametric set default standards
Place the ladder, Ladder Edit

Adding Ladder

12
Placing Railings
Open Drawing 6, Change to line Model
Railing Settings: Dimensions and Shapes (Set default)
Select Railing and Place in the model
Change to shape model
Don’t have the high level of detail

16
Placing Footings
Open Drawing 8,
Change to line model > Footing settings
Length (24) , Width (24), Depth (36)
Std – ASTM and Code – Concrete
Select Footing tool and pick the end point of the columns
Change to shape model
