OmniScan MX2 Training Program – Section Details
The MX2 training program is
divided into specific sections
that are designed to take the
users through the various
software functions in a logical
sequence.
Each lesson with detailed
descriptions and explanations
followed by step-by-step
exercises and movie
demonstrations where
applicable.

OmniScan MX2 Training Program – Applications
The MX2 training program attempts to insert as many application examples
as possible relative to the section.
Throughout the slide presentations and movies there are application
examples to illustrate the software feature including data samples, photos,
or procedural tips and concerns.
There are also a series of special applications at the end of the training
program that combine all of the unique aspects of inspections such as weld
inspection, corrosion mapping, TOFD, DGS, AWS, etc in one place
repeating and emphasizing certain aspects of the hardware, software and
procedure.
Regarding the tools and type of C-scan analysis required, the applications
are basically divided into two groups:
1. Amplitude based inspection (Code based weld inspection, crack detection and
sizing, component quality testing, etc). These inspection primarily use amplitude
based C-scans and are dependent on amplitude based calibrations and sizing
techniques.
2. Time of flight inspection or TOF (Composite delamination, corrosion mapping,
TOFD, etc.). These inspections primarily use position C-scans and typical
require more depth\thickness\TOF measurement.

OmniScan MX2 Training Program – Supporting Documentation
Supporting documentation for the training program comes primarily from the MX2
software manuals and the Olympus reference manuals below.
Modern phased array systems like the MX2 do not require an advanced knowledge
of mathematics or acoustic theory and the training program focuses on practical
explanations and real world application examples for the working inspector.
Supporting theory, mathematical formulas, and more advanced PA concepts can be
found in the books below available from the ONDT web site.
6
OmniScan MX2 Training Program – An A-scan is an A-scan
Throughout the program the concept that an A-scan is an A-scan is
emphasized and the majority of tasks and procedures that are performed in
phased array inspection have more to do with managing large amounts of
data and completion of repetitive tasks than learning a new inspection
technology or reinventing traditional UT inspections with more data.
The answer to most questions students have during their phased array
training is: “Exactly like we did it in conventional UT. An A-scan is an A-
scan….but we are more dependent on software to manage them.
