Chapter 7 Lesson 3 : Cell Transport

Facilitated Diffusion

 Cell membranes are built around lipid bilayers, the molecules

that pass through them most easily are small and uncharged.
 These properties allow them to dissolve in the membrane’s
lipid environment.
 But many ions, like Cl, and large molecules, like the sugar
glucose, seem to pass through cell membranes much more
quickly than they should.
 It’s almost as if they have a shortcut across the membrane.

Facilitated Diffusion

This process is known as facilitated diffusion.

Chapter 7 Lesson 3 : Cell Transport

So, what is facilitated diffusion

Facilitated diffusion: is a process in which molecules

that cannot directly diffuse across the membrane pass
through special protein channels

Chapter 7 Lesson 3 : Cell Transport

Facilitated Diffusion

 Molecules that cannot directly diffuse across the membrane

pass through special protein channels in a process known as
facilitated diffusion.

 Hundreds of different proteins have been found that allow

particular substances to cross cell membranes.

Chapter 7 Lesson 3 : Cell Transport

Facilitated Diffusion

 Facilitated diffusion does not require energy.

 Particles still move from an area of high concentration to
an area

Chapter 7 Lesson 3 : Cell Transport

Facilitated Diffusion

 Cell membranes have proteins that act as carriers, or

channels, making it easy for certain molecules to cross.

 The function of protein channels in the cell membrane is

to make it easy for certain molecules to cross the
membrane.

Facilitated Diffusion

The cell membrane transport proteins

allow selective transport of molecules & ions.

1. Carrier protein

A carrier protein alternates

between two conformations,
moving a solute across the
membrane as the shape of the
protein changes.
The protein can transport the
solute in either direction, with Carrier protein
Solute
the net movement being down
the concentration gradient of
the solute.
